FAT MATT'S RIB SHACK

My wife & I went to Atlanta for our son's college graduation last weekend. One of his friends hosted a BBQ, and served excellent barbecue from FAT MATT'S. I've wanted to try their BBQ for a long time; I rode shotgun for the pickup. We picked up: 10 racks of ribs 10-lbs. of chopped pork baked beans rolls, bread & sauce The verdict: GREAT! Ribs are (almost) as good as my all-time favorite, FLINT'S in Oakland, CA. I'm not a big fan of chopped 'cue, but this was terrific. Just juicy enough, great flavor, texture- sauce could have had more kick, but I'm sure that's available. Baked beans- well, they were baked beans. Anyway, I'd rather eat more ribs. So I did. Now, if it had been my party, I would have ordered some chicken and sweet potato pies, too. Maybe next time. The kicker- the bill came to what a party of 5 or 6 would pay for "BBQ" anywhere in NYC. Nice. Ron

Saw a piece on this place the other night on Fine Living Network. Everything looked great. After reading your post, I looked up the website, but they only ship bbq sauce and shirts. I was hoping to get some of their rum baked beans. They looked excellent. Next time in Atlanta ............. Kevin

You'll be glad if you go, Kevin. I'm hard to impress, and I really thought the ribs were excellent. It's my kinda joint, too. My son said they have live music on Saturday nights; I guess the band sits on your lap. Ron

Fat Matt's is my favorite rib joint--better than Dreamland, Letha's, Arthur Bryant's, Interstate, Corky's, Jack Stack, Bubba's or any of the many others where I have gnawed the bones. His Chicken Snack next door to the Rib Shack on Piedmont Avenue NE is also terrific.

Did you miss your kolaches for breakfast on that trip?

I love Fat Matt's. Haven't been there in awhile so it might be time for a trip downtown.
