Mother-in-law Sandwich Sat, 05/24/08 10:23 AM (permalink)
Over on the Roadfood Digest blog, there is written mention of this sandwich being a Chicago specialty.

It's a tamale on a hot dog roll with chili. This being Chicago, there are some veggies on top. The tomato is obvious, but is that a pickle slice on top?

This example is from Fat Johnnie's, 7232 S. Western.

I'd try one.

It's really a Southside of Chicago specialty. Most places west and north do not offer this...some folks swear by them...I'm not one of them.

When I read the topic header "Mother-in-Law Sandwich" I surely expected to see a recipe for a vinegar laced tongue concoction.

Actually the sandwich sounds very good to me especially since I am a tamale fan. I only hope the tamale is very good.

is this in reference to the term, "Mother-In-Law" sandwich?
I can think of several other body parts that would more accurately describe mine, though I can't imagine them between pieces of bread, or really even partaking of them.

Typically, a commercial brand such as Tom Tom is used. They're fair at best.

Growing up, we used to eat hot tamale sandwiches…..recipe from my granddad……now I’m thinking I’ll have to make one soon…..

Heat canned tamales (I know, sounds nasty, but like a White Castle, they are an acquired taste…..
Take 2-3 canned tamales, depending on size, and unwrapped, on a slice of regular Beefsteak rye bread

Top with a slice of cheese (optional), and (this is important) some ketchup and some shakes of Texas Pete’s hot sauce.

(Grandpa always used American cheese, and the ketchup-hot sauce mixture. Last time I made it, I used pepper jack and salsa.)

Add the top slice of rye bread, smoosh it down a bit, cut in half, and enjoy.

Wash it down with either an RC cola, or a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Don’t forget to salt the beer.

Believe it or not, these are pretty good!

I’m going to have to make one, and toast my dear old grand dad!

Easy on the ketchup, or use salsa, like I do, and it's great.

As far as a carb/starch fiesta in concerned; not all that different than having a tamale with rice and beans. I'd eat it.

St, that sounds good! You and I are the only two here that like canned tamales. My favorite brands are Austex and Bryan. How bout you?

I just came back from the store with a can of tamales. I have the Beefsteak rye, the salsa and the pepper jack cheese.

                                          1. Definition of MIXED EMOTIONS- When you see your Mother-in-Law drive your new car over a cliff!

                                          2. I grew up loving canned tamales, but after having many of my H S students bring in homemade tamales to share on the various days of celebration in SoCal, and finding a couple of great Tamales Mills in our town, I was converted to the "real" Tamale stuffed with pork or beef!! One of my favorite roadfood items !

I won't say 'never again' to the canned variety, as good local Tamales are hard to come by in this area...but on our next ride down thru Mississippi We will be sure to visit some Delta Tamale places.

Still haven't made it to the store to buy the tamales and rye bread yet.....had some other things that needed to be eaten at home first. Also am not brave enough to take it to work at eat in the lunchroom....like a sardine sandwich, this is probably best eaten at home.

                                                  how was yours, Mr. Hoffmann?

I bought a loaf of what you describe out here in AZ. They call theirs "New York- New York"! Kinda catchey isn't it? Might make a good title for a Song!

Update: finally got around to having this…..wish I had pics for you all….

Hormel beef tamales, a slice of hot Monterey Jack pepper cheese, a couple tablespoons of salsa, and a few shakes of hot sauce on rye, washed down with a beer. It was great! Just as good as I remembered.

I bought a couple extra cans of tamales just to have on hand....been too long since I had these.
