RE: The Hot Dog Wars Fri, 08/22/08 5:09 PM (permalink)
Because of this thread, I bought a package of the Oscar Mayer Premium Beef franks when they were on deal for $2.50 a pound (They normally retail for $4.99 in the supermarkets around my way.) They did change the spice formula; it reminded me of the flavor of the Ball Park Grillmaster Smokehouse franks. The smoky flavor was liquid, of course. These franks were definitely spicer than before, but I can't define "before" because I can't remember the last time I bought Oscar Mayer franks at retail. I think I quit Oscar Mayer about the time they started selling packages of mechanically deboned/separated bolonga in supermarkets. If you were to run your tongue over a slice of that bologna, it felt like you were licking sandpaper. But, I digress. The franks have a funny red color, possibly from paprika. I found the casing rubbery and the frank tough to chew. Maybe they should have left the sawdust or whatever they used as filler in the new formula.

A friend once served Oscar Mayer Ready to Serve Pork Sausage patties. It was one big mass of gristle. The same with one of the two franks I ate today. To see what was going on, I removed the frank from the bun and cut across it with a very sharp knife. Little bits of spring-loaded "stuff" popped out across the face of the frank. You don't see that on Karl Ehmer or Thumann's franks. When I was through, I had a nasty bit of frank stuck in a gap between two teeth. I removed it with a toothpick. It appeared to be some elastic substance. I pulled it apart with my hands, then let it go. It snapped back like a rubber band.

I read the marketing hype both here and on other sites ( such as: "We have even higher quality cuts of meats, a different unique spice blend to make it just the beefiest, juiciest hot dog that we've ever made," said Sean Marks, Kraft's senior marketing director.") about the improved Oscar Mayer franks. Even the label on the package reads: Now Even Better. No artificial flavors, colors, fillers or by-products. But after trying these franks, I believe Kraft Foods is using this product line as a dumping ground for their animal byproducts and covering it up with strong spices.

Has anyone tried the Ballpark Angus Franks? If not, I may have to take one for the team.

Hopefully, neither OM or the "plump while you cook 'em" dogs will survive such a war.

I love Oscar Mayer bacon, but their hot dogs suck. I rarely buy hot dogs at the supermarket, but when I do, it's going to be Vienna brand ( all beef. ) I do love a good hot dog, and it's for people like me that God invented Superdawg!

growing up in Central New York, the Hot Dog Wars were between Hofmann's of Syracuse, Zweigles of Rochester, and Sahlen's of Buffalo.

I don't know if Albany or Binghamton has their own local made hot dog, but like the usual results of the Golden Snowball contest, the winner, IMO, is always Syracuse. Go Hofmann's!

Lee, the John Morrell dogs are real cheep... about $1.49. The Decker dogs are more the high end of grocery store dogs... about $3.98. I always thought they were a national brand.

My Grandaughter and her 12 or so friends in the neighborhood all grew up eating the John dogs. I could not afford to feed em the Decker dogs. They would go through 2 or 3 packs at a time. The dog of choice for the kids was the "PapaJoe's Gourmet Hot Dog". A John Morrell dog w/ dill relish and regular mustard, on lightly toasted white bread.

The new neighborhood craze, it's mostly girls in the 5th. and 6th. grade, is the "Roadfooder"s Nightmare".  A turkey dog, cause their friends made them scared of what's in a regular hot dog, with mustard down one side... and mayo down the other, on a lightly toasted slice of wheat bread. Some like nacho sliced jalapenos down the middle. :~)

"Which is the best hot dog?" This is the root of the never ending law suit trades of Kraft and Sara Lee. Aren't the two companies aware that the court is not the one who has the capacity to decide which makes the best hot dogs. Consumers are still the best judges for this food war. Promoting a product or marketing a brand can be very tough. The legal concerns around it, however, are even tougher to navigate. Oscar Meyer and Ball Park hot dogs' producers today started a fight in the courtroom. The issues at hand may seem minor, however huge amount of money and the way you shop could possibly be impacted by the outcome of the lawsuit. these two large companies  really have a lot of stuff to settle. I also read an article talking about these very same issue you have here. It says there that advertising a product or marketing a brand could be very tough. The legal questions around it, however, are even tougher to navigate. 2 hot dog producers today started a court battle over marketing. These lawsuits may seem trivial. The reality, though, is that the outcome could have an impact on the way you shop. CHICAGO - America's two largest hot dog makers are waging a wiener war as grills fire up this summer, hoping to win over customers and secure the No. 1 spot atop the stagnating frank market.

The latest round in the long-running feud comes as Kraft Foods Inc.'s Oscar Mayer brand gives its signature hot dog a makeover aimed at stealing momentum from Sara Lee Corp.'s Ball Park Franks.

I consider both to be bland ... perhaps best fed to puppies, crows, and inmates in the old folks home...

                                        heh heh...

Just as some folks prefer Chevy's and some Ford's...is there a true weiner (winner)...???

Ballpark says they "Plump Up when you cook them"...well...so does cookie dough...AND they didn't have a cool set of wheels and a theme song...

Oscar Mayer was something we never saw at a Giants-Dodgers game, and the weenie-mobile was never seen driving 85mph down US Hwy 101 with Oscar himself at the wheel...

I think they got their start in the Sierra Nevada during the gold rush...

If I want a FRANK...it's usually Hebrew National

If I want a LINK...it's usually Evergood Cajun Hot Links

Out here in the west Millers is a popular brand that was wholesale only until they saw a cash cow in retail sales and went whole hog  (uh...sorry...I just had to)

I agree with most of the people here. I'm not a fan of either brand and they're way overpriced. I don't mind paying that price if it's a hot dog I like... such as one of the off-brands I'd find in a Texas Weiner joint.
