Cocktail museum opens

In New Orleans, which claims to be the place where Cocktails first began, a Museum to that Noble drink is about to open. The drink that made the sunset and the yardarm famous, that made 5 PM one of the most important times of the day, that made many a neon sign manufacturer rich---is about to have it's lil' ol' museum right there where it started. By the way when I first came aboard the good ship Roadfood there was a gentleman nicknamed ---Grampy---who was writing a book on Cocktails ---- has anyone any info on him and his book ???

Lee--------it is a up to the minute, 1st class, A#1 liberal joint. There is no ban at the Bar, they bar no one. Ya Payes ya money and ya takes ya choice. Belly up to the Bar boys, the drinks are on the house. Actually Lee I don't know but I would assume so. Someone has to pay the rent.

Oh yes I forgot---Greymo I guess Rob Chirico was Grampy in disguise. I hope he has made a lot of mullah with the book----seems like something every bar and every serious drinker should have. Thank you for your reply. Down the hatch.

Grampy (Rob Chirico) has put out a neat little (that is, the format is small ) book of cocktails. I bought a half dozen copies and gave them as Xmas presents a few years ago. Now, whenever I go into a bookstore I look for Grampy's book among the cookbooks and move whatever copies they have into a more prominent position - just my small gesture to help out a fellow roadfooder. Cheers, John

Sorry, ancient mariner-I dont believe New orleans is where the cocktails, or the cocktail hour began. What is the basis of your opinion?-My parents in the 40s did just that-and Dad had every kind of cocktail glass there was.......martini,tom collins, manhatten, etc.....

Ann Peeples your father was way behind the times. The first reference to the cocktail, including a recipe was in a newspaper in 1806--------sorry but 1940 just doesn't cut it. I remember all those Thin Man movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy and he was drinking Martinis all through the show and those were in the 30's. Great fun movies------all done without cursing and with clothes on even in their twin beds. If you want to read more there is a lot of info about the Museum --just google cocktail museum. But you must be over 18 or the site will not open. Here's looking at you kid !!!!

Course other places have their own version of how the cocktail was invented, but in New Orleans it's attributed to a local apothcary - Antoine Peychaud (Peychaud's bitters) around 1795. He'd have his friends over after the shop closed, and mixed up a concoction of bitters and brandy in an egg cup called a coquetier ... Though there may be no truth to the story, I do believe he's at least credited with inventing the Sazerac.

Greetings. I was just googling my name -- a sorely human endeavor these days -- but that's what separates us from the beasts. That and making a proper cocktail. Speaking of drink, I have just learned that the Sazerac has become the official cocktail of New Orleans, the only city with its own official cocktail.

Grampy, It's great to hear your voice again on these forums - we've missed the Fascist Prick who used to stir up the rabble. Are you still tending bar in the netherlands of Massachusetts? Cheers, John

John, the book has sold about 25,000 copies, but I'm still "behind bars" three nights a week. Happily, the book has garnered a couple of free trips to NOLA to make cocktails and hang out with the pros I had only read about. Cheers, Rob

I wonder if there is an official drink of The United States or other countries?...Russ
