Michael Stern is right--pepperoni and Greek apizz' seem to be immutably welded together. And, sycophant that I am--Mr. Hoffman also rings true with Tsitsiki's Corollary: Exxon Valdez residue is a must.

And kudos to Mr. Callahan for even THINKING of using the term "salad detritus." This thread is getting more fun every day. I'm going to have to stop up to see Dickie at Beverly Pizza, my fave Hellenic pie, a scant 200 yards from home.

Has anyone found recipes for Greek-style pizza crust? I used to live in Roslindale MA and loved the Roslindale House of Pizza linguica and pineapple pizza. The pineapple was a great foil for the greasiness of the crust.

I'm in Nashville now so there's no hope of finding that kind of pizza place. I'm not sure if it's even possible to make Greek-style pizza crust in a home oven, but you never know.

I enjoy the flavors of a Greek pizza....but it needs MEAT to be complete. I have often begged and pleaded with the owner of Thousand Islands Restaurant in Brockville, Ontario to add the option of 1/2 of a skewer of pork souvlaki meat on the Greek pizza....to no avail. He maintains the cost wouldn't be practical...that people wouldn't be willing to pay for a pizza that expensive. Obviously, he hasn't ever visited roadfood.com or he'd see that there are true chowhounds out there who would line up for a Greek pizza with souvlaki meat on it!!!

You can choose from 2 greek pizzas in my town. One place does a greek chicken with black olive, green peppers, onions and a sweat white sacue. Another does it with traditional pizza sauce, feta and lamb. Both are excellent.

Yorkside Pizza in New Haven, which yesterday I posted a response to someone looking for pizza in New Haven other than the usual Pepe's & Sally's. Coincidence?

I'd always thought of it as Greek pizza, but only because it was different from neapolitan & sicilian and the Yorkside owners & employees were Greek. And the pizza is fabulous and distinctive.

Broadway owners founded Yorkside Pizza (around the corner) about 25 yeara ago and its still, so the flame still burns...

Here in Columbia SC, I think the term "Greek Pizza" applies mainly to the fact that the restaurant proprietors happen to be Greek. But in this area they absolutely make the best pizza, particularly a 2-store "chain" called the Parthenon. Typical Greek fare offered as well, Greek salad loaded with feta, gyros, Greek chicken, etc. The pizza is better than others in are due to touch of feta (not overwhelming as I am not a huge fan of it), tons of oregano, great sausage/gyro meat, and crust that is perfect halfway between hand-tossed and thick. Takes about 40 minutes after you order to get a pie, so you know that much attention goes into the preparation. If in the area, give it a try. (Downtown Columbia in University area or suburban location in Lexington, SC)

Here in the Worcester Mass area, most independent pizza places are owned by Greek Americans, or Romanian Americans (who often call themselves Greek). For a true Italian Pizza you may want to go to Boston or Springfield. Some of the best local pizza is (in no special order) Tony's on Rt 146 in Sutton, Pizza Chef Main St Millbury, Nikko's Grafton St Worcester, and many more,,,,all Greek American owned.

Around here (Kennebec River valley) Greek pizza is the rule rather than the execption. Most places are the "__________House of Pizza" (fill in the name of the town).
This trend also seems to hold ture in MA, with two places from my Boston years (City House of Pizza on Boylston and Brighton House of Pizza on Packard's Corner), the aformentioned Rosie House of Pizza, and several numbered Cape Cod House of Pizza (Cape Cod House of Pizza #3 in Chatham, for instance).

I grew up in trumbull and fairfield ct and LOVED captains pizza. It was a me and my dad thing - mom hated it. but a few summers ago we hit the links and then up to captains for a sausage pie and I wished I was 13 again.
                                  Captains is NOT good.
Uncle Joes in New Canaan is VERY good greek pizza

ive had good greek pizza, with the olive oil instead of sauce in Woods Hole Mass. In a little place right by the ferries to the vineyard. The place makes subs, too. it's been there forever, but the pizza part is fairly new. i CANNOT remember what it's called.
                                      good though.
