Rudy's Bar & Grill in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC

Has anyone been here?
Rudy's serves free hotdogs. A lot of free hotdogs. In fact last year they gave away 55,000 free hotdogs. They also sell a lot of (cheap) beer.

The Scene
Rudy's is one of the last bars in Manhattan where suits, slackers and lifetime ne'er-do-wells commingle in a laid-back, beer-laden haze. It's always loud and crowded, even when the backyard "garden" is open.
The Draw
Heated on one of those fast-food rotisseries and served with a plain white bun and a little mustard, the full-sized hot dogs are always free and always available--so long as "the hot dog guy" is behind the bar. The blackboard lists about 12 brews on tap, from Bud to Checker Cab Blonde Ale; Rudy's Red, the house brew, is dirt cheap but rather weak.

I've been a couple of times and I think it's great, exactly as described, right down to the fact that there aren't many places like that left in Manhattan (although being a fan of old bars I could name several others). Unless things of changed recently, in additon to cheap beers they had a special of a PINT glass of cheap wine for $3. Never seen that anywhere else....

Please, no one ask me what brand of hot dogs they serve. They taste just fine, and as the review says, they are full size, not mini or 12 to a pound. If I had to guess I would say 8 to a pound.

I haven't been to Rudy's Bar and Grill since before they started cleaning up Times Square. I always thought of it as a dive bar. It might be fun to find out who's franks they serve. Stahl Meyer's Sweet Meadow, Bar S, Hygrade mystery meat are a few brands that come to mind that wholesale for about 12 cents a dog.

I guess it's now an "In", "Chic" Dive Bar.

A few beers, a few dogs...good conversation on the cheap. What's not to like?
