1. Does anyone know how vanilla got to be the most "common" flavor? Vanilla beans/extract themself are fairly expense. (I am also curious about howcome chocolate - intereestingly, also from a bean....)

2. We sometimes think of vanilla as a throw-away flavor:
b-o-r-i-n-g. I think vanilla is a good test of good ice cream. Can anyone recommend a great place (or brand) for vanilla i.c.?

Too many people have only had cheap vanilla flavored crap.

A good quality vanilla is a pure mouthful of heaven. There is such a differance in texture, smell, color etc.

Everything else is actually just vanilla with flavorings added.

My all time vanilla ice cream favorites are the ones served at the University of Maryland dairy store (made on campus) in College Park, MD, and that served at Legal Sea Foods restaurants in Massachusetts. I don't know if it still the same after Winn-Dixie's bankruptcy, but Winn-Dixie owned a factory in Plant City, FL that produced their house brand of "Prestige" ice cream. The Vanilla was great.

Vanilla ice cream is my favorite. If I order a shake, it's always vanilla malt.

Down here in central Texas, my favorite is Blue Bell Natural Vanilla Bean.

I also like Haagen Dazs Vanilla Bean.

Around Knoxville, the favorite vanilla is Mayfield's out of Athens, TN. Vanilla is also my favorite.

Growing up in the 50's, we always wanted Breyers(then it was a "premium" ice cream)...Breyers Vanilla had the bits of vanilla bean throughout...still does..looks like pepper flakes throughout!Today I look for a good French Vanilla...Rich and creamy...
Growing up my mom would also take us kids to an old fashioned Ice Cream parlor in Union City,NJ that served a Vanilla 'soft Cream"...not soft serve custard,,,but a much softer, creamy ice cream...loved it over bananas!!

Last week's Boston Globe Food section had a taste-test of different brands of Vanilla.

My favorite has always been Brigham's. Probably only available locally here in New England, but I'm not sure about that.

If I'm eating just ice cream, I want a pint of Ben & Jerry's (Phish Food, Cherry Garcia, etc.). But when I want ice cream on "something" (apple pie, grilled fruit, etc.), I always go for Brigham's Vanilla.

(not that I would ever turn-down a dish of plain vanilla...)
