Latin food in The Hamptons Thu, 08/28/08 11:09 AM (permalink)
Last week the NYTimes had an interesting article on Latin food in "The Hamptons" with a social class twist.

In the past number of years, many Hispanics have move to areas around The Hamptons in NY as "service" people. In fact they are pushing out the original Hamptons residents ("The Bonakers" who are local fisherman who have lived there for generations).

Anyway, the article stated that a few restaurants have opened for the recent immigrants with their home foods, tacos, etc. The wealthy Hamptons people would never think of setting foot in these places (which are real "Road Food" kinds of food.) so some restaurantuers are making crossover food, hiring local Mexican and other Latin folks to cook their traditional foods, maybe make them more upscale (and charge a fortune!).

Interesting colonization, no?
