Knickerbocker still sold well in Massachusetts even after demand cooled in New York. I don't think production continued after it's last brewer, Schmidt's of Philadelphia closed.

When I was a Brooklyn 18/19 year old in the summers of 1966/67, we used to go to Riis Park Beach in the summer. The beer stand there carried 4 beers: Shaefer and Rheingold were 50 cents a can, Reading Beer (who knows how they wound up carrying that, I never saw it anywhere else in NY) was 40 cents, and Knickerbocker was 35 cents. Guess which one we drank.

Even though I don't drink, I do have my own beer related memories. I remember that, when I was a kid, my dad drank nothing but Drewry's beer, which ( I think ) was out of South Bend IN. I also remember the TV commercials for Blatz, which featured animated beer containers ( a bottle, a can , and a barrel ), each with a head and limbs. My favorite memory, though, is the big diamond-shaped Burger beer signs ( "Have fun... Burger Beer" ) that used to line US 52 from Cincinnati all the way east to Portsmouth OH. BTW, I've had one beer in my life, a can of Old Milwaukee in the early '70s... yecch!

Uh, there was no "Blatz brewery" in the '70's.

Blatz was bought by Pabst in the late 1950's and closed it, but the Feds eventually made them sell it to Heileman over anti-trust concerns, in the late-60's.  By the time Heileman bought the "brewery" there was nothing left but the brand name and some trucks.

Heileman later built a "microbrewery" in Milwaukee (1980's) and used the famous "Val Blatz" name for it but when they hit hard time and started selling off brands and breweries, Miller bought the brewery for it's subsidiary, Leinenkugel, who runs it to this day.

I should clarify-I was probably drinking Heilemans Blatz in the 70s, but many of the original Blatz brewery Buildings still stand and are listed on the national register of historic places. The actual brewery was converted to apartments. I took a tour this past summer of alot of the old Milw. breweries-outside, of course, as they are no longer used as such.

I grew up in Yonkers and our neighbor and my dad's best buddy  was a salesman for Ballantine Beer (a Yankees sponsor at the time) so we had it in the house all the time I was growing up.  Sure miss it.

Ah, gotcha now.  Two different thoughts- the beer and the restored brewery.  Never saw a lot of Blatz on the East Coast once it became a Heileman product and I thought it was one of those local brands that Heileman sort of neglected much to the annoyance of the Blatz drinkers who were left.

They did use the "Blatz" name for their Schoenling Little Kings Cream Ale "clone" beer, that even came in similar 7 oz. green bottles.

I don't recall what beers came out of that Val. Blatz (now Leinekugel) "microbrewery" they built in Milwaukee in the '80's (perhaps it was an all-draught facility?).  Heileman never really penetrated into the Northeast (even after buying the Carling-National brands), so I never saw most of their giant stable of beers back in their heyday of the 1980's.   I did like their superpremium, Special Export, but that apparently turned into the same sort of "marketed like a malt liquor" product that the aforementioned Ballantine XXX Ale has.

In my haste, I forgot what I really wanted to post! Did ANYONE else like Cool Colt Malt Liquor? It was flavored with menthol. I had a Cool Colt party once, and ended up with 12 cases of empty, rinsed-out cans to trade.

Up until the early 1980s, there was a fine quality lager made in Puerto Rico, Corona, but it has nothing to do with the Mexican Corona beer. It was a tasty lager perfect for hot n humid climates but then they went out of business, now their former brewery has been taken over by Bacardi to produce their Hatuey brand of beer which is an improvement on the beer that was first brewed in the Bahamas. I've been to Cuba several times and the original Hatuey beer in Cuba is far superior to the Bacardi product just as Cuban rums are much better than anything Bacardi produces

Colt 45 is readily available in downscale neighborhoods and downscale retailers of beer in the NYC metro area. However, it is impossible to find in better stores.

How about Ortlieb's ? Joe's beer as seen in a commercial down here in the Lehigh Valley during the early 70s was made for the real beer drinker - the kind that gets a case during the week and another case for the weekend. My kinda drinker anyways but I only tried Ortliebs once and don't remember much about it.

worst beer i ever drank- back in the early 80's it was going for like $3.75-a case! in the baltimore area.  red white and blue as well as weidemans beat this stuff out.  it tasted like it was liberally laced with cinamon.

I haven't been able to find Coor's Extra Gold in the last 7 years. It had a maltier flavor than their regular "banquet beer." Darker in color and richer in flavor, it was a great summer drink. Never have seen it in Alaska though.
Raineer beer is still hard to come by, even here. Do they still produce? There is still sinage in the local bars but no one carries it.

It's still available in many markets, where it is often priced much cheaper than Coors Banquet or Coors Light - in NJ, for instance- the latter two are $19.99 a case, and the Extra Gold is $14.99- the same price as their economy brand, Keystone Light (30 can case in all cases).  Suggests to me it may be a different recipe than the original version that was priced at (maybe even higher?) than the flagship beers.

Rainier Beer and Ale, like half the brands noted above, are just two more of the dozens of labels now owned & marketed by Pabst, brewed at MillerCoors facilities.  They have a website Rainier Beer, but list no Alaskan distribution.

Knickerbocker still sold well in Massachusetts even after demand cooled in New York. I don't think production continued after it's last brewer, Schmidt's of Philadelphia closed.

Apparently, Heileman brewed Knickerbocker (probably in Baltimore, with the rest of the C. Schmidt's & Sons brands they bought) for awhile, as did Stroh after they bought the Heileman brands and breweries.

The Ruppert brewery was, perhaps, the first major East Coast brewery to collapse after Repeal.  They were in the top 5 in the late 1930's (larger than their local NY-NJ competitors Ballantine, Leibmann [Rheingold] & Schaefer) but had fallen to #16 (pretty much tied with another local metro area "also ran", Piels) on the 25th Anniversary of Repeal in 1957 and the 3 other locals were all in Top 10, brewing 2-3 times as much beer.

By 1965, they were gone- and the labels bought by Rheingold.  They were the last brewery in Manhattan- until the brewpub, the Manhattan Brewing Company, opened in the mid-1980's.
