How about the King of Donair in Halifax Nova Scotia. Donair is the french term for Gyros. They make great Donair (aka gyros) Pizza and a French Canadian dish called poutine which is spicy gravey on french fries with melted white cheese curds.

Small chain here in LA called Burrito King.

OK It is time to dust off the file on Royalty!! I have submitted a review and fotos for the KING RIB joint(s) in Indianapolis...but am having trouble again getting the review thru the process, SO I will put a teaser here and hope you will see the whole thing shortly in the permanent file.

Getting off the I-465 at Exit 42 (Pendleton Pike) you see the smoke and smell the 'Que' before you get to the entrance.



KING RIBS is a 5 unit mini-chain in the Indy metro area. This unit is a simple Drive-Thru and Drive Away type of service. The cookers are out back in the parking area, and the building looks like an IN'n'OUT or Rally's with a drive up window on both sides....no tables or any other extras!



We will find a local park next time and have a real picnic, but this time we were hungry and headed out of town , so the Rack of Ribs and sauce were consumed in the truck.



Ribs, Pulled Pork and Beef and BBQ Chicken are the main dishes, with sides and Sweet Potato Pie available to finish things off. Prices are reasonable and you usually don't have to wait more than a minute for your order to be ready !



All in All, King Rib qualifies as realROADFOOD Royalty !!

Doesn't the name BURGER KING prove that you can call yourself anything you choose but true restaurant royalty is only attained by providing patrons great food and not through marketing slogans?

OK Mr. Mayor, give us a better rating on these ribs than what you did. I plan on being up there in a few weeks and if you rate them highly, I will get a full slab.

I did a full write-up for the permanent review board on this site. If it makes it thru the creation process It will tell you more than you want to know.
But in case it takes awhile. As you can see by the order-board the sides are traditional, and they do have both Chess and Sweet Potato pie.
We got a full rack of Ribs and some sauce on the side. The Ribs were really good. A mild smokey flavor (lightly seasoned)...and a little chew to them, as opposed to being what I consider overcooked- when they disintegrate as you try to take a bite off the bone. The sauce is sweet, a little spicy and definitely tomato-based (not spicy hot)...but it has a taste that reminds me of the 'juice' that comes off of great BBQ Beans...and stays with you for some time after you finish your meal.
The notes on the King Rib Joint on 16th Street says it has tables for those who wish to eat-in...but this one sure didn't. It would be ideal for a hotel based visitor who would like to tote a brown bag of goodies back his room. If you enjoy eating in the "Rough" You will appreciate this place.

Mr. Mayor, I observed the pics of the ribs in somebodies lap. From what I can tell from the pic, it appears that they were not overdone, brown and beautiful. I like them not overdone and just a little fat still there. I will try them when I am there.

Sundance and anyone else who might be interested,

We stopped at the King-Rib again in Indianapolis today (saturday) to check on some of the unanswered questions after our last visit.
1. The stand on East St (U S 31) on the south Side of Indy is closed for good.
2. We visited the stand on 16th St. Not far from the Speedway. It has tables/booths for eating-in as well as a few picnic tables out front if you want to sit in the sun.
3. The ribs at this location were just as good as the ones we got at the Pendleton Pike stand a couple of weeks ago. (Very Good)...We also got 2 half chickens and they were outstanding!
4. On the down side, We ordered a BBQ Pig foot. ($2.00) I have enjoyed a pickled pig's feet as bar-food many times, but this was NOT good. It is not pickled it is simmered in the sauce til it is a mass of gelatin connecting the bones. Best evaluation=YUCK.
5. The side dishes --
A. GREENS and CORNBREAD-
B. BBQ BEANS- Way over-cooked & Pasty
C. POTATO SALAD-Kroger deli is better
D. SLAW- NOT Recommended.
Overall we will visit the place again...but get the Ribs and Chicken to be the main dish for a picnic (they are really good!)...and get the rest of the take out somewhere else or make it ourself.
