Western Mass Meat Up (5/17/09)

I'm thinking of a Western Mass Greet & Eat …

At the strong urging of Beth and some others, I'm thinking we might be able to get some RFr's
together sometime before Memorial Day of 2009, on a SUNDAY to hit a few renowned
Roadfood stops that are favorites around Northampton.

UPDATE:
Sunday, the 17th of May, 2009 !!!

My thinking:
_________________________________________________________________________________
STOP 1: WILLIAMSBURG SNACK SHOP

Just a small trailer, set up in the parking lot of a garden shop for lobster rolls and fried clams.
The lobster roll is a specialty at $6.95 and they USUALLY have fried clams on the weekend too.

_________________________________________________________________________________
STOP 2: JOE'S PIZZA, NORTHAMPTON

Not currently on the site, or in any current books, as far as I know … but they have a very old
Roadfood sticker on the door. I figure they once were and seeing how nobody's been around
to keep the review fresh, they have fallen out … but nothing has changed here for years.

Joe's has been the local favorite for a crackery, thin crust pizza and other "red sauce" specialties
forever.

Joe's is only open during the day on weekends between Labor Day and Memorial Day … this is
influencing the timing parameter ... I figure, it'll be warm enough to eat out in Williamsburg and
Joe's will be open still -- just before Memorial Day.

Downtown Northampton, this afternoon:

_________________________________________________________________________________
STOP 3: BUB'S BBQ, SUNDERLAND

Bub's would never be championship BBQ in anyplace with any competition, but the place has held
on around here for 25 or 30 years and has more fans than detractors … and the place does have
some atmosphere.

http://roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3953&SearchTerms=bub's,sunderland

_________________________________________________________________________________
FOR SWEETS: HERRELL'S ICE CREAM
Steve Herrell is the undisputed innovator of the smooch-in (copied by many, such as Cold Stone, over
the years) … My favorite is Heath Bar Crunch in Burnt Sugar ice cream.

Fanatics would probably want to do a comparison with Chocolate Emporium. I am not a maniacal
sweet tooth … As a result, I've never seen the need to even try the Emporium even though it is just
across the street.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Finally, if anyone feels the need to walk off, or walk up an appetite, a walk around Smith College is nice.

Some Smith Pictures:

... or, for that matter there is plenty of shopping and other
things to explore in downtown, Northampton.

My Northampton page -- with plenty of links about other things in the valley too:

… best viewed in anything BUT Firefox.

So, is anybody up for a springtime eating adventure in the valley ???

East Granby is just 40 miles from here ... You might be one of the closest RFr's.

I hope we can pull something together.

Isn't (or wasn't) Smith a Women's college? Where the Hell are the girls??

Yes, Gail and I might be interested in such a tour, but at our age we cant commit ourselves more than a week or two ahead of time - Hell, we dont even buy one-year magazine subscriptions any more...

Not sure about that. Maybe you are thinking of Holy Smokes , which was in Hatfield. Their restaurant, which was an old church, burned down early in 2007.

Thanks Gregg; just to clarify, we have a wedding Memorial Day weekend, so I meant the Sundays prior to that whole weekend, not the Sunday the day before Memorial Day Monday.
When it gets closer, we can see which dates are better for the majority.
I will see if Karilyn wants to come.

Unless Bub's burnt down after 2:30 PM today -- when the picture was taken ... I'd say the rumors of Bub's demise by fire are false.

If anyone is comming from out of the area and planning on spending a few days in that part of the state an attraction that may be of interest is
Brimfield. A very large antique show that is along Rt.#20 with dealers from all over the country.
It runs for almost a week with some fields opening daily and others are open for the full week. The opening is May 11 and the last day is the 16th. It's a little over an hour away from your final destination.

Anyone who likes shopping for antiques owes it to themselves to visit the Brimfield Show at least once in a lifetime.

I noticed the dates are the 12th through the 17th though in 2009.

Hi Gregg, you know I'm up for this. I'm now living in Wilbraham and would like to get together sooner to get some of these places up on the site. We missed you at the Albany Hot Dog Tour this past Saturday -- and if I'd've thought of it, you could've ridden with me! D'oh! Chris

    Ouch. Sorry to hear it.

I'm impressed that anybody has plans that far in advance ... I haven't quite figured out next week (although, after some pressure from others, I am trying to tie down the holidays schedule.)

    Hello all ,

I'm impressed by the photos and maps before tour , pretty cool.
I may be able to make it although Mrs Benzee probably will not be able to as she will be eight months along around that time .
As of now , its on the calender .

I just spoke to my brother last night, and have confirmed that I will be in Rye, NY on May 16th, so if the Eat & Greet is still on for May 17th, I am in.
