I had a couple curry wurst in Germany. They came as part of a combo platter. The ones I had were highly seasoned and the oil had a yellowish-curry-powder color, but there was no sauce on any of the sausages(except a hot sempf for dipping)

Yep. Have had them here in the States at many a German deli and even have a kick-arse recipe developed over time. Sliced white brats or metts, tomato based curry sauce and crusty bread. The curry aspect comes from the yellow madras curry powder in the sauce. This is great 1:00am drunk food as is a proper donar kebob.

Sorry. To clairfy this, many currywurst recipes use ketchup and there is even a curry ketchup available in the EU. I use canned tomato sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, yellow Madras curry powder, sliced apples, chili flakes, brown sugar, beer, heinz chili sauce and a few other goodies to make my own. No ketchup, and recipe is straight from a local now defunt German eatery. jjjrfoodie

http://www.germandeli.com/sicocu4li1l.html I got this from the link posted by Foodbme. If you check it out the curry is in the wurst. They do offer several currt sauces but you would use a curry wurst rather than a brat britt

While in Germany, after a hard night, we used to stop at a vendor that set up outside of the X-1 disco. He had Currywurst mit Brochen ( a type of bread with a decent crust on it). We would spend what few remaining Marks were in our pockets to get a late night snack. It was truly great.

A lovely German woman who lived for many years next door to us introduced us to a curry sauce on bratwurst. Her's was very simple - ketchup and curry powder to whatever fits your taste. We still do this although she moved away a few years ago. Cheers, John

Moin, John! A Bratwurst is never a Currywurst over here in Germany. Even topped with Ketchup and Curry Powder...!!! The Bratwurst is always fresh, fried in the pan, or over charcoal, the trad. german Currywurst is always boiled/brewed in salted water, with or without skin, after cooling down for at least 24 hours, the trad. german Currywurst will be fried in a pan, served with the very special Currywurst-Sauce (Never plain Ketchup!!!...), and topped with curry-powder, and the very special "secrets", from mild to wild... The very best german Currywurst is av. at "Konnopke" in Berlin. Link: http://www.konnopke-imbiss.de/ CU for a Currywurst over here in Germany! Michael

"Looks like there is Ketchup there to me." Nonsense! A typical german Currywurst-Sauce has nothing in common with plain Tomato-Ketchup, the very best Currywurst-Shacks here in Germany hold their recipes "secret", for many good reasons... It is not "Ketchup" ala McDonalds, this is the serious stuff, for the adult people... http://www.youtube.com/wa...y0WWQXLHzc Michael

Well, she never called it "currywurst" - to her it was grilled brats served on a bun with ketchup/curry powder sauce. This thread is the first time i ever heard the term "currywurst". Cheers, John
