Salt Lick In Round Rock

The legendary Salt Lick in Driftwood Texas has been a big hit amongst the local BBQ eating folks. I myself have never been there. I did eat at the new Salt Lick on Hwy 79 in Round Rock. I found it to be pricy and the food pretty unspectacular. Anyone else share these sentiments or did I just go on a bad day?

I dunno, doesn't a chain imply more than two?

If they have two places is it really considered a chain? Unless I am missing more from their website.

I remember several years ago there was a second Salt Lick on 360. It was a pale comparison to the one out in Dripping Springs. It closed. I'm surprised they tried this again up in Round Rock after the first failure.

Being stuck up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin I don't get out much

Bushie and I stopped into the Round Rock location on my last trip through town. From our discussion, my impression was that they managed to get the "feel" of the Dripping Springs location into Round Rock, which was something that they did not do with 360 locale. However, I was nonplussed by my meal. When in that area, there is just so much outstanding BBQ to choose from, I would have to be there for an extremely long time to choose this location of the Salt Lick over some of the other really good 'q in the area.

If your going that far, go a little further to Taylor on Hwy 79 for really good bbq at Louis Mueller's. Now, thats real BBQ!

There's a Salt Lick BBQ in Vegas now , too (at the Red Rock Station Casino, way off strip) Been to the cutting edge casino, but not to the BBQ place, due to unspectaluar feelings like those expressed here.

Yes, Salt Lick is now in Las Vegas. The son, who I now consider to be somewhat of a %&@$&*, has decided to turn it into a chain, and he has ruined the place.

Last year on our way to Anchorage we left via the Austin/Bergstrom Airport - wasn't there a Salt Lick mini place there as well? I first started hitting the DS location better than 10 years back. My most recent trip revealed a different place - I don't believe the original restaurant has a lot of what made it great left in it. Fairly pricey, and the Q was less than wonderful. Even Austin Iron Works' Q was better than my last Salt Lick experience.

I find the ambiance of the Salt Lick in Dripping Springs to be very good. However, the food is at best mediocre. Its a place I would take out of state visitors who aren't really educated on the intricacies of Texas barbecue but would appreciate the setting. If they had educated palates, I would take them on the other side of Austin to Louis Mueller's in Taylor. Its got its own ambiance too.... Smoke covered walls.

I too made the mistake of getting some Q from Salt Lick at ABIA. It was as bad if not worse than the Q they sell and the airport in Dallas.
