Hot dog recommendations from PA Dutch brands? Sat, 01/31/09 9:18 AM (permalink)
Does anyone have a recommendation for good hot dog brands that may be found in the stores around Lancaster PA? I will be going up there in early April and might want to fill a cooler with some good bacon, dried beef and hot dogs to bring back south. Thanks!

Berks is a good beef and pork dog. Although it's fairly mild (and skinless) due to regional tastes, it has a good flavor. It's exceptional fried and on the grill. This particular dog is fried in peanut oil and served with mustard, onions, and a pickle slice at Toby's Cup in West Jersey. Very good.

Kunzler's also makes a decent beef and pork dog. It's used by Charlies Pool Room.

I don't particularly care for Hatfield's, which is also found near Lancaster, but their New York style beef dog (not their regular or Phillies beef dog) is very good.

I agree on Berks....and if you can find a farmers market or two there may be some exceptional choices.  There is a Farmers market on Fri and Sat in Boothwyn PA at Booth's Corners.  Some of the stuff there is lovely!

Here's a link to a taste test my family did a while back on two local PA Dutch brands, Sechrist vs. Weavers.

Shady Maple Farm Market is definately the place in the Pa Dutch area to shop for a selection of Hot Dogs.

I'd also reccommend Sechrist's Butcher shop in Dallastown Pa for a real old time Main Street Butcher with a good selection of various cured meats.

Thanks for your advice! I'll make a note of these and look for them. Ken, I am very familiar with Weaver's meats - love them!

Amen to Ken. We lived in York County most of our lives and ate Sechrist's hot dogs, smoked and unsmoked, with skin and skinless. Wish we had them here in Florida. If you buy the ones with skins, if you grill them the outside is like Kevlar, so split them first or put those little slices in the sides.
