How much are you paying for ice in your drink ??? Tue, 04/28/09 6:51 AM (permalink)
Recession-hit restaurants are helping themselves to your wallet by serving you an extra side of super sneaky charges.

The Post last week found city eateries subtly billing customers for things usually free -- including bread and butter.

Although managers claim the prices are clearly marked on menus, the outrageous charges can backfire on restaurants, experts said.

    Counterproductive?
A place could only do that to me once.

      Amazing..I read this story.....

      Talk about pissing off customers.

Actually, in certain places in Italy they put a charge on the menu for bread..."Servicio" or whatever they call it in Italian....

Oh, Do not ask them for butter!!!  The waiters get so pissed off.  Hey, I asked..Too bad.

Having bought the bread or the cocktail, charging for butter or ice is just wrong.

I believe as this recession, crisis, journey into fiscal lunacy, whatever you wish to call it will bring more and more insidious and however ingeniously creative "service" charges to seperate you from your money. All the while pissing off the populace. Every time I read the whiny self serving excuses from the eateries representatives I just want to puke. What this will do, is cull the these resturaunts from the remainder that just tighten their belts and the ones that remain standing will be the ones that people remember did not try to screw them for a glass of water. Just because it's on the menu doesn't make it right. It appears that these folks have learned from the banks and credit card companies how to seperate us from our money. Oh yeah, and lets not forget the cell phone service providers. There... I'm done.

I think it is ridiculous-and that is the way to ruin one's business. As one of my great bosses taught me-"Volume of sales hides the sins of the cost".And he was right. When the sales come, the profit margin greatens.

              Hello All,
              It's like a disease...find something to charge
the customers for something that once was
a traditional part of the fare.  When we be
charged for air conditioning in the summer
or heat in the winter. (Yeah, I am sounding
              absurd.)
Is the economy and business really this bad?
Or are there some taking advantage of a "crisis?"
              Take Care,
              Fieldthistle

Since the Chinese will have complete ownership and domination of the U.S.A., we better accept these changes.
Me, I believe in langniappe and giving a little extra.
Charging for ice is insane, especially at the steakhouse that was mentioned in the article. Some restaurants use real butter that is just cut and placed into a ramekin, or the costly pre-packaged stuff. Any chef worth his salt knows that you can double the volume if you whip the bejeesus out of it with a mixer.

But why have bread and butter,
When olive oil is so much better?

keep the ice----fill my glass with the drink!  a 44 oz cup filled with ice first gives you about 18 oz of drink!--and i like my whiskey neat too !

They can keep the ice and water but I got to have real butter on the bread. That's the worst part of moving to the south. they all serve margerine.

Maybe they do in the Texas part of the south, but not in the Mississippi part. Most of the places I go use the real stuff.

Very enlightening article. Thanks for sharing! I suspect we'll see more and more of this. It seems very similar to the idea of cereal boxes and other containers getting smaller while the grocery stores charge the same price. Trying to get more out of their customers without them noticing. Of course, if a customer does notice, the restaurant's probably lost them as a future customer.
