Fun report and IMO what this site is all about. For me it is the photo of the green Honda Element at the boat ramp that made me think I was taking the journey. That is the color of mine.
I think that I mentioned that my plates say GAMERA as I think of that vehicle as a big, green Japanese super turtle. Sure looks like one.

The one place you visited that meant the most to me was Lynn's Paradise Cafe. I can never learn and see enough about this restaurant.

Wonderful trip report. Gorgeous photographs and interesting commentary. I'm quite intrigued by Beacon's. It was the first picture of the wonderful sign that had me at first sight.

OH MY GAWD....MY ARSE IS NUMB....I feel like I road in the car the whole way and back with you.  EXCELLENT REPORT!!!  I'm from SE KY right at the Ky, Va, Tn line.  My Mom's family is from Western NC and I felt as though I was home!!  The mist in the Smokeys happens all through the day and night, not just in the morning.  It's why they call it THE GREAT SMOKEY'S.
Wish I had seen about your going, I would have directed you to the BEST KY HOTBROWN in the state.  It's in Lexington at Buffalo's and Dad's.  It's a total hole in the wall and might scare you before you walk in, but it's to die for...better than THE BROWN HOTEL in L'ville!  You definately have to have a taste for them....I love them and miss them so much living here in FLA.  I would have also suggested your driving up US 25  and not the interstate into Ashville.  So many good "meat n three's."
I thoroughly enjoyed your report and will probably look at it again!!

What a great trip report! I loved that you explored the backroads wherever possible, took great pictures along the way, and stopped at some great places!

How did you plan a trip of this magnitude? How did you decide what roads to take, what highways to avoid, what towns and places to see?

And I love that S&H Greenstamps sign! I need one!

Looking forward to your Mayberry Days post. I'm a long-time fan.

Thanks, callmebruce. This trip was actually quite easy to plan, as I've been taking the same route from Chicagoland to Mount Airy since the mid 1970s ( generally twice a year. ) Virtually every other highway that I drove on the trip ( SC, TN, KY ) is one that I've traveled at least a couple of times in the past; I've driven US 441 through the Smoky Mountains National Park a dozen times or more over the years. I love old metal advertising signs like the S&H Green Stamps that you mentioned ( remember those? ) Since Merita bread is an icon of sorts in North Carolina, I'd like to have one of their old signs to display in my apartment; either that or Cheerwine. Originally I wasn't planning to do a full trip report for my upcoming NC trip in September, as it would duplicate so much of what's in this report. However, there's lots of great scenery and stuff along US 52 that I didn't photograph, especially in West Virginia, plus I'm going to be visiting some interesting places in Sept. that I didn't back in May. Therefore ( drum roll )... there will be a full trip report in early October. Figure on at least 11 or 12 pages. Don't say that I didn't warn you!!

Update 10/28/09: Make that 18 or 19 pages; I took almost 900 photos on last month's NC trip!

Great! I'm looking forward to it.
Do you stay at any non-chain hotels or motels? If so - would you mind posting a pic or two? I'm trying to learn more about the older mom 'n pop motels as well.

Anyway, looking forward to more pics and a travelogue!

Occasionally I'll stay at a mom n' pop motel, like the Laurel Park Inn in Maggie Valley NC back in May, but for the most part I stick to chains ( Red Roof Inn, Super 8 and Days Inn are favorites of mine. ) If I do stay at any indies in the future, I'll make it a point to post pictures of them.

I just remembered, Bruce... I did take a couple of pictures of the Laurel Park Inn. It's a pleasant little mom n' pop place on US 19, not too far east of the NC entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I sure hope that ol' Mother Nature is more cooperative in September than she was in May. I had mostly lousy weather on that last NC trip, and I don't care to have a repeat of it on the next one.

Yesterday, while going through a box of odds and ends, I found this old menu from Mount Airy's former Riverside Restaurant, known today as the Olympia. I'm not sure of what year this dates back to, but I'm reasonably sure that it's from the 1980s. I had totally forgotten that a friendly server had given me the menu as a souvenir way back when. Look at those prices ( those were the days! )

Posting the Riverside's menu photos reminded me of a picture that I meant to post much earlier in this thread. This sign is on US 52 just north of Mount Airy NC ( Brad Olson, you keep your paws off of this sign!!

Good news! A long-closed Roadfood restaurant is back in business. On page one of this report, I posted a photo from last spring of the former Shirley's Diner on US 52 in Clarks Hill IN, which, after changing owners and names several times, has sat abandoned for the last few years. However, when I passed by it on my just-completed North Carolina roadtrip yesterday, it was once again open for business under the new name Flo's Roadside Diner. Hopefully the new owners can make a go of it, and I'll be sure to check the place out sometime this summer.
