Martin Rosol hot dogs Wed, 05/27/09 10:23 PM (permalink)
just got my shipment of 5lbs of Martin Rosol hot dogs from New Britain CT via a friend of mine that hauls cars up & down the east coast.
only 5 lbs because the don't have any presevatives in them & they don't last too long in the freezer.

But boy are they good.  Mucke's are my favorites, but Martin Rosol has more SNAP in each bite than any other brand that I've tried.

Every relative that my grandparents had in New Britain that visited us during the 60's would bring down Rosol's hot dogs,Kielbasa, and V loaf and those huge rye breads from Waterburry. Gee, I miss that. First time I had ever seen natural casing hotdogs growing up in Miami.

Martin Rosol's dogs are served at Capitol Lunch in New Britain and Storrs.

That they are John Fox.  But to me the sauce at Cap Lunch has gone down hill in recent years.  I know someone who tried it recently and hadn't had it in years.  He said it tasted like, "crackers and spices."  I must say, I kind of agree.

There is another place that is reasonably close that are better; and and they use Martin Rosols. Berlin Pizza at 196 Berlin Turnpike in Berlin.  While it is a pizza place, they sell more hot dogs than anything else.  They use a footlong, or maybe a ten inch MR instead of the typical smaller dog used at Capitol Lunch.  They also put there dogs on a grilled New England Style Roll, which I personally prefer.  Their sauce has a much meatier taste.  I would suggest "The Mexican," which comes with mustard, raw onions and sauce.

The funny thing is, Doogie's opened up almost right next door.  The last time I was in there, I asked if they think they lost any business to them.  The woman told me to look around.  It was about 12:30 on a Tuesday, and the place was almost full.

I wasn't crazy about the Cappy sauce either. Guida's in Middlefield serves footlong Martins Rosol dogs that they grill and place in a New England style bun.

                My shipment, 5 lbs = 32 hot dogs, $16.00 = 50 cents a hot dog.

The way they come, right off the rack.

I used to live in Newington for 50 years.  I've had all the hot dogs. And, yes, Capitol Lunch sauce was way better years ago.  But most of the places serve a chili sauce, not a meat sauce, which is what C L serves.
I've heard that Cappy's sauce has gone down hill since we left Connecticut.  But Martin Rosol's hot dogs remain the same.

I'll be in Ct this summer and would like to buy some Martin Rosol's and perhaps othe dogs to bring home in the cooler. Are they available in grocery stores, or do you need to go to a butcher shop? I'm thinking about the time of day I'd need to be going through the area.

                    Thanks!

I've seen Rosol's for sale in the fresh deli departments of both large chain supermarket chains and small, independent supermarkets in Central Connecticut. The Shaw's chain seems to carry several local frankfurter brands in their deli departments. I never did go inside any mom-and-pop butcher shops up there. Try calling Rosol's for suggestions:

Thanks David. Shaw's sounds like what I'm looking for.

Maybe I'll bring the large cooler!!

doug, from what I remember the MR dogs we got in the supermarkets weren't quite the same as the ones we got right from MR. in New Britain. also they're cheaper at Martin Rosol's plant.
my friends that are still in CT. tell me a lot of Shaws closed down.
if you want I can get you the address & the hours that the MR store is open.

Stop and Shop in Newington has Rosol's hot dogs in their deli section.  You can get them at the plant also in New Britain.

Always have a hard time choosing between Rosols and Hummels.  It's grea to have choices up here!

All cooked and ready to be dressed.

One with just blackie's relish, one with gulden's spicy brown mustard and blackie's relish, and one undecided.

After eating the two, I decided to just go with blackie's relish on the third, because the gulden's spicy brown mustard brought more heat out of the relish. The taste of the relish on its own is more to my liking.

Excellent hot dogs, Excellent relish.  A great treat from New England.  All we needed were Sunbeam rolls.

Rosols do have a good snap but for me they are a bit too salty.  Stew Leonards in Newington also carries Rosols.
