Meatloaf on my Weber Mon, 06/1/09 2:28 PM (permalink)
I had planned on making meatloaf for dinner on Sunday. As a rule I do one plain and one basted with BBQ sauce. Which made me wonder how it would be done on my grill using indirect heat. I used a mix of applewood and hickory wood chips and did baste one of them towards the end with BBQ sauce. We really enjoyed them! What a great sandwich for a midnight snack too!

Here's a picture of one ready to go.

All set on the grill.

Finished!

Sliced and ready to eat!

Wow, I sure hope the BF laid out burger!  I too could use one of those sandwiches.  About how long did they take?  I have the same grill.

May I suggest that next time punch some holes in the bottom of the aluminum pan for the fat to drip out, and place a drip pan under that to catch the drippings. Or, you could just slip the meatloaf directly onto the grill, with a drip pan underneath. Oh, and you might consider adding some soaked hickory chips atop the coals for a very special flavor.

Very good suggestion.  I always put mine on a rack when I do them in the oven, not sure I would have thought about that on a grill.  Placing the meat loaf directly on the grill did occur to me though.

I did all of those suggestions. except putting the meat directly on the grill. As I stated I used a combo of hickory and applewood chips.

My meatloaf is very moist and I was worried it would not hold up alone to the grill. I put quite a few holes in the pan I placed them on. My instincts were correct and they turned out great.

Recipe please! I love meatloaf, and never even thought about doing it on the grill. The indirect heat would work like the oven, but you also get that nice smoky flavor. I honestly don't think that placing the meat directly on the gates of the weber grill would be good though, it would just slip through. When I do it in the oven, I use a ceramic pan which helps cook it evenly, but it often ends up being soggy cause none of the juices are allowed to escape. Poking the holes in the bottom of the tinfoil pan probably solved that problem. Ok, I'm getting too excited about this. I gotta go make one myself.

You must have an unusual grate on your Weber if a meatloaf could slip through. I've been doing them for years on mine and I've never had a meatloaf slip through the grate.

Then again, I've never had a steak or a hot dog or a hamburger or a turkey or a pork roast or a duck or a pheasant or a zucchini ... slip through the grate on my Weber.

Well I would hope so. It might disturb the neighbors if they saw you grilling it without your pants.

Let me guess. You're going to shoot an elephant in your pajamas.

And how he got in your pajamas you haven't the slightest idea.
