Gloucester City, New Jersey Browns Stop-In on RT. 130 Sat, 06/6/09 3:43 PM (permalink)

Brown's Stop-In is on Route 130 in Gloucester City, NJ. A little north of the Brooklawn Circle on the right, headed north.

We couldn't resist trying it . It was even  better than it than our first impression!

We had a great diner here a few weeks ago on a trip from South Jersey, to Williamsport PA.  The owners & waitress were very friendly! We had home made stuffed peppers over mashed potatoes.  We were full all the way to Williamsport! The prices are very low. Very few Mom's & Pop's in NJ compared to PA.

    Crazybob,

Thanks for posting this report.  I see that you live in Williamsport (which would explain a trip to Williamsport, of course).  Do you ever eat at the Country Cupboard restaurant in Lewisburg?  We stop there on our trips through the area and really enjoy the broasted chicken.  Just curious.

We drive by the Country Cupboard restaurant on US RT. 15 almost every week in the summer. It looks like a nice place. & heard that it has real good food. We will give it a try maybe next week when we go down to Mifflinburg to shop at Wergner's.

We actually live in Millville, NJ, but have our own Mon & Pop business near Williamsport that we operate in the summer. So we travel back & forth a lot ..always looking for small places off the beaten track.

Mom's Dutch kitchen in Danville, Pa. (exit 224 I-80) is nice.

We noticed that the folks around Willamsport & the Lycoming area are very polite & respectful. Not much crime around here!

I thought Brown's closed years ago, or was there another one a little farther north on US130, around Camden? We used to go there once or twice a year with our kids when they were little, after taking them on a shopping spree at Harry's Discount Toys, which was a great place for low low prices on closeout toys. Harry's is also long-gone.

I thought (the former) Brown's was in Collingswood.  I bought one of the first editions of Roadfood and it was in there.  Couldn't find a listing for it anywhere online, so I gather that it's been close for awhile.  Nice to see a new location.  Is the same family running it?

I haven't been to this place in years, since I lived in Pennsauken! All I can remember is a good milkshake. I remembered them being in Collingswood, too, but I don't go on that part of 130 often these days, so I can't remember. next time we pass it, I'll take note of it...you know what, though, it probably is Gloucester City. That's just below Camden, for those who may not know (and you really don't want to spend TOO much time around there, people...)

Our son went to Bucknell so we've been to the Country Cupboard a few times.  They cater to bus groups but the food is good. For a real roadfood place try Good Wil's in Montandon (just east of Lewisburg) on rt 45 just east of rt 147. It's very popular with the locals and the college kids.

Thanks for posting this, Bob.  This place was written up in one of the early editions of Roadfood, if I recall correctly.  I never made it over there and then Brown's didn't show up in later editions.  I'm glad to see it's still around and this time I'll make a point of going.

Yay!  I love seeing pictures of places from my 1st RF book!  J&M say they made their own ice cream for the Delicious shakes... they also explain that a cheesesteak is made with CUBE steak!    It was on Nicholson Road\Route 130 in Collingswood Heights.  " The strip of road it's on is pretty ghastly--lots of peep shows and adult book stands."  Roadfood 1977.    Thanks for the report, very nice.

Bad news.  I went to Brown's this afternoon and it looks like they are out of business.  The place was closed, dark and mostly empty.  A For Rent sign is posted on the door.

I'm thinking they'll move. Hoping, anyway. Maybe with all this 295 reconstruction and the general nastiness of that whole area, they'll go to a better location. I used to take my daughter there when I lived in Pennsauken. I remember they had good milkshakes.
