Name the side dish to the left of my patty melt.

Bonus question:  Where was this served?

I didn't have my camera, so all you get is this lousy cellphone picture.

Looks like fried potatoes with either gravy or some kind of sauce..

myterry2 -

That's what it is, but I'm looking for the specific name for the dish.

Just a wild stab in the dark:

I'll say they're called "wets" and were served in Baltimore or some other eastern city in that vicinity.

Probably wrong but I'll play along.

I remember having a dish like that in Wisconsin. I think they were called "Yanks".

Here's a hint.

I was dining in this area earlier this week - that side dish was not from one of these places.

Thanks for the guesses, folks.

What you see here are Phil Rohrer's "Famous" Raw Fries from Phil Rohrer's Lunch in Two Rivers.  These are essentially fresh potato chips; but they are not allowed to get crispy.  They are served when they are still slightly limp or even soggy.  You can get them plain, with butter, or with gravy as I did.

When Phil makes them, he takes a whole russet potato and slices it directly into the deep fryer using a hand held mandolin.  It is quite impressive to see.

I like a well-done patty melt. Speaking about the bread, not the meat.

It was brown gravy, nothing special.  But I pretty much licked the plate.  It goes really well with the raw fries.

My wife tried her raw fries with butter on them.  That was a decadent combination.  I didn't get a picture until they were almost gone, but you can see that they were swimming in it.

i do not care for the ones with the butter, but the patty melt looks soo good and so the raw fries with gravy. I like butter, but not food swimming in it.
