Where are the better spots in and around Ruidoso (within an hour or so) to eat? Our family will be there over the Christmas hollidays and any advice would be appreciated.

I am aware of that site. However, all of those restaurants are going to purport to be great so I was hoping for some true, hand's on reviews.

        hookemtms,

I was in Ruidoso about 18 months ago and was blown away by this place called Disco Taco, which is right off the main strip, right outside the eastern part of town... it reminded me of a hole-in-the-wall neighborhood taqueria every Chicagoan likes to claim as their own, only the food was ten times better. There's nothing quite like a place where your first visual upon entrance is a popcorn machine filled with fried pork fat.

I also ate at Chef Lupe's, which is on the main drag in town, and was quite good; I think people tend to suggest it more than Disco because it's cleaner and the service is better. My brother, who moved there, eats there like twice weekly; he swears by the place, so there's your rec from a local. i was so impressed at the quality of mexican food down here that I ate at a bunch of places, their names I've unfortunately forgotten; if it doesn't have a tacky name--stay far away from casa blanca, trust me--and looks like a diner, chances are it should be good. Otherwise, franchise steak buffets were the big thing when I was there.

Oh, wait: there's this place called the Texas Club, in a condo development off Meechem, that supposedly has great steaks and chicken fried steak, but it remained illusively closed during my time there. I would check to see if it's open.

Near the White Sands Proving Ground in Southern New Mexico. About half-way between Roswell and Las Cruces.

I haven't eaten in Ruidoso, however...

I used to eat several times a year at the Smokey Bear in Capitan, about a half hour north of Ruidoso. It's a modest place, with decent breakfasts, green chile burgers (and other sandwiches), and homemade pies. It's been a couple of years since I've been there, though. See mixed reviews at:

Another in Capitan that sounds good (but I haven't checked out) is El Paisano:

The Capitan area is one of the place my wife and I are thinking of moving to when we retire.

If there's a Blake's Lottaburger in Ruidoso, you might try that as well. It's a New Mexico chain, with good green chile burgers (the chile is mild). I know there's a Blake's in Alamogordo, about 35-40 miles away from Ruidoso.

There are fancier restaurants in Lincoln (home of the Billy the Kid legend). Ellis Store is a great B&B I've eaten at (wedding banquet).
