Peanut Butter ?

Hello Roadfooders!

I like Peanut Butter, the "creamy" version. The supply is very limited here in germany, only 2 -3 brands are offered, all imported from the USA. In the Netherlands, there one can find many brands of american made PB, also many dutch brands.

I want to try, to make my own PB, I need a receipe, who can help me out...?

BTW: Prices for a 350 gram portion of Barneys Best PB here in Germany range from 1,79 to 2,19 Euros, somewhat expensive for such a small portion...

I cannot really tell you more than the recipes say - you can search via Google for answers.

I am looking at a jar of Peter Pan creamy peanut butter and the nutrition facts say in 32 grams (2 tbspn serving size) that there is 140 mg of sodium and 3 g of sugar.

As I wrote further above, the supply is very limited here in Germany, and I am very sorry about that. A trip to the dutch food stores near Groningen is about 1-1/2 hours from here, so why not try to prepare my "own" PB. Dutch cheesemongers sell PB here on weekly markets, far to expensive. They double the price for a 1000 gram glass of dutch PB, bastards!

     Sure can relate to your problem. I actually hate peanuts but love peanut butter. Here in China the availability near nil it's Skippy or Chinese brands (beltch). I prefer the chunky even harder to find. The price 13.5 yuan $2 US for 340 grams. Thried the alternatives Chinese brand half the price opened it  1/4 a slimy smelly oil tried mixing it horrible product, dog said run.
     Happened upon a market many were grinding peanuts in a big vat what a great smell seeing the product said yeah bought a ton of it first taste empressions moldy sawdust. 2nd this stuff lethal.
      I'm stuck battling the few foreigners who scoop up every jag or skippy when it does hit the shelves, we all cringe in agony as the grocer fills in the empty space with chinese PB.
      Ship it to me ? The cost of shipping be so much higher then drepping the 2 euro's it cost now.

Try it out amd blend the butter the way YOU like it----hazelnut butter is AWESOME in a classic Elvis sandwich!!!

I own an old "Moulinette" from the early 1970s, a heirloom from my grandma, I hope, this thing will do the job...

MIchael G, I gotta say I love your enthusiasm.

To me, peanut butter is one of those "from the gods" foods. I love it in all forms, but my favorite is chunky, natural (where you have to stir it), and salted. My favorite way to serve it is with fruit; fresh blueberries or sliced strawberries, or sliced peaches, on wheat or sourdough bread or toast. And with tea, or strong coffee, or cold, cold milk.

Out of Adversity comes Opportunity1 Why not get a good grinder, some good peanuts and some good oil and go into the business. Start out small at first in your local market then create a website called "Peanut Butter for ExPats' and  Target Emails to the various Expat web sites and groups. Gotta be a WINNER! I don't know anyone who doesn't like GOOD Peanut Butter, except my Grandson, and others, who are allergic to peanuts.

I Like PB for breakfast, on fresh toast, combined with the typical german Zuckerruebensirup (sugar beet syrup). I use this here well kown brand.

Also I like to cook with PB, a teaspoon of PB in a poultry-ragout on rice adds a very special flavour, I you dont overdo it!
Pfannkuchen (Pancake) with PB and Grafschafter Goldsaft is also one of my favorite dishes, LECKER!!!

Foodbme, the laws for food production are very strict here in Germany, and I do not have the capabilities here to procuce large quantities of PB, just for my own usage and some friends...

Here in northeastern PA, in the great grocery store Wegman's, we also get... cashew butter, and almond butter.

We buy only natural peanut butter where the ingredients say only peanuts and salt. Palm oil is added to many brands to keep the oils from separating. We buy our peanut butter now because natural is more readily available. We used to make our own with just peanuts and a blender. Way too easy to make your own. There is nothing to it. Finding fresh peanuts was the difficult part because they too are usually adulterated.

Here is a cashew butter recipe.  You can see it is very similar to the peanut butter recipes I gave you, and with another similar recipe you could make almond (or almost any other nut) butter.

As far as peanut butter manufacturers go, besides the 3 major brands there are other companies that make a number of what are called "private label" or "house" brands. (Each company puts many different labels on one or two different peanut butters that they make.)  This is the same idea as one single brewery making several different brands of beer.  For example, the company that puts Kroger brand labels on their peanut butter might also be the one to put A & P labels on some of the same peanut butter, or Great Value labels (for Wal-Mart), or Food Lion labels, or Price Chopper labels or Ralph's labels.  The 3 major brands are just the ones you will most likely find in a grocery store anywhere in the U. S.

That's the one---just make it with Hazelnut butter instead of Peanut---absolutely wonderful!!! ANY nut can be made into a butter---use the peanut butter recipe and substitute what nut you want---we made brazil nut butter once---and while i am thinking of it--a favorite breakfast sandwich from my youth is peanut butter,onion,bacon and mayonaise on toast!
