Magazine Article About NYC Hot Dogs Sun, 08/16/09 8:53 AM (permalink)
I was in Borders the other day with my wife and saw a magazine cover with 2 hot dogs on a plate on it from across the store. (Ok maybe I was 3 feet away but the other way makes for a better story). I started browsing in and eventually bought the July/Aug issue of Edible Manhattan. I had never seen it before but it's very well written. And yes there was a nice article about hot dogs in NYC. Nothing earth shattering but nice mentions of Shake Shack, Nathan's, Crif Dogs, Papaya King and Gray's Papaya along with the history of hot dogs in Manhattan. I'll save you the $7.00, here's a link to the article.

        From the article,
"But Gray’s Papaya and Papaya King have resolutely refused to dabble in newfangled franks, austerely offering traditional, natural-skin hot dogs with standby toppings and little else beyond a dodgy line of fruit drinks—principal among them papaya, intended to help you digest the pig offal, transformed by a miracle of butchery into an aerodynamic icon of culinary greatness."

Except that both establishments use Sabrett all-beef hot sogs.

Wow! That was a (pardon the intended pun) mouthful.
