Traveling to Detroit June 2010 - Wed, 09/30/09 9:08 PM ( #1 )
Hello fellow roadfooders, I will be traveling to Detroit in June 2010 and would love to hear about "don't miss" eateries and restaurants.  Any suggestions?  I am open to most anything, especially interested in Chili Dogs, Burgers, Steaks, Eggs Benedict, ext... Chinese joints, the unusual, Deli's.  Gosh did I forget anything?  I'll be at the Ritz Carlton in Dearborn and immediate plans are to hit all the car museums/exhibits.

I did a trip to Detroit last year

Please see my trip report for ideas. Specifially the first page.

although it encompasses several cities in the Great Lakes region, it provides specifics about the Detroit area as well

That should give you enough time to get your will in order.

I sure wish I had known about this website in 2001 when I went to Detroit. It might have made an unpleasent trip a bit better.

The Polish Village Cafe, 2990 Yemans Hamtramck. Real cheap eats and just across the parking lot from the Polonia.

Miller's is a bit over-rated,but maybe that's because I live here.Latfayette Coney, always a pilgrimage for "Doggers". For Deli, either The Star in Southfield,or Zingermann"s in Ann Arbor. If your stuck in Dearborn(conference,or something like) that I would suggest "The Big Fish" or"BD's Mogolian Grill" very close to where you are staying.I'd suggest a cart somewhere, but there aren't any, that's why I'm here.To learn as much about the business as I can. How 'bout that "newbie"string for us that don't want to be a pain in the.....

I have seen Polish Village Cafe, but have always eaten at Polonia.  Do you think PVC is better?

I have only eaten at PVC but have been in Palonia and it seemed mor like a bar. PVC is in the basement and is made up like a rathskeller. Also if you see two things on the menu you can order one as a appitizer and th other as the meal. Large portions and good food. I am going there on Wed, chicken liver appitizer and gulosh for the meal.

This is a previous post about Palonia and PVC
Polish Village has a little bigger menu and a lot more atmosphere. I have never eaten at Polonia.  The one time that I tried, after eating and drinking at P.V. they were closing and wouldn't let us in. Another good food place is Under the Eagle on Jos Campo, like eating in Grandma's living room.

I will also recommend Lafayette Coney's.

For great fish and chips, I always love Scotty Simpson's.

The Lark in Westbloomfield if it is in the budget. By far the finest restaurant in the state or the mid-west. The owner is almost 80 now and it continues to be the best place for almost 20 years.

Rated best restaurant in the United States in its last Readers' Poll.

Both Polonia and PVC are very good.  I have a slight preference for Polonia, but the PVC menu is larger.  Last time I was at Under the Eagle, it had gone down hill.  Don't think I'd go back.  I can also highly recommend Weekday Cafe in Eastpointe although it's not very near Dearborn.
