I'm not familiar with San Francisco and know nothing about Sears and I hate to see institutions like that go out of business. But, after a careful re-reading of the article it seems that a really lousy businessman made a series of stupid mistakes and ruined a local institution - they have no one to blame but themselves. thousands of small business' have survived and thrived after facing up to the costs of paying decent wages and benefits to their workers, meeting minimum health, safety, and access requirements, paying rising taxes, and changing with the times- they could have done it too if they hadn't been so stubborn and backward thinking. You can bet they took a good living out of the place while it was going down the drain.
