A Pleasant Seafood Surprise In Maywood, NJ Thu, 10/8/09 9:27 PM (permalink)
Let me begin by saying that I wasn't looking for a restaurant when my day started. My intention was to stop in at The Maywood Market to get some cheeses for a weekend party. That being said I glanced across the street and saw an unassuming little building that I had passed dozens of times in the past. I knew it was a seafood retail shop but was surpised to see that it was also a restaurant. My curiousity aroused, I entered the spotless storefront, it's display case filled with top quality filets and shellfish. A good sign, I thought to myself. In the rear of the shop are about 10 -12 tables in a no frills dining area. Although there were several excellent specials on the menu, including Orange Roughy, Swordfish, Lobster and Shrimp combinations I elected to order from the regular menu. There is a large selection of seafood prepared just about any way you prefer so everyone should be happy. There are also some "landlubber" items available.
The first course was a velvety smooth and perfectly spiced Lobster Bisque which I would recommend to anyone. I was left wanting more, a recurring theme, I would find.
I followed up with Clams Casino. Six succulent examples of this classic appetizer arrived piping hot. Large clam meat with diced peppers and onions in a flavorful broth. If there was bacon here it wasn't evident to me but these are still some of the best I've had in a long while. Again, I considered a second order.
Finally, I had the Lobster and Shrimp Francaise. Three jumbo shrimp and a medium lobster tail on a bed of linguine, smothered in Francaise sauce. The shrimp were perfectly broiled an delicious but the lobster tail, I have to say, was slighlty overcooked and had a muddled taste that was slightly disconcerting. Since I have done the same thing at home I'm writing it off this time. The linguine was just firm enough to make you happy and the Francaise sauce was very pleasant, although I would have liked a bit more lemon but that is a personal choice.
Dessert was uneventful, Key Lime Pie, (Edmond's?) fereshly defrosted, but that isn't why I was there. If there are any good bakers out there get in touch with this place. You never know.
I must mention that the service was fast and attentive. The young man working the back room is a great match to the excellent food.
There was also another gentleman, who I assume was the owner, checkng in often with the diners. When I mentioned to him that I was happy to find a quality seafood restaurant that wasn't all decor, he put it this way..."It's all about the food!" That sums it up for Seafood Gourmet. I'm sure that I'ill be coming back many more times in the future.
