Recreating "the Tunnel of Chili" - Hot Dogs Stuffed with Chili Recipe Wed, 11/11/09 11:07 AM (permalink)
I've been looking through the forum here trying to find a recipe for making chili dogs at home, more specifically, chili stuffed hot dogs like the discontinued "Frank n' Stuff" hot dogs from Hormel.

I found a post about the "Frank n' Stuff" on here no problem.

Frank n' Stuff

But I can't find the post about how to make these bad boys at home.

Does anyone have a recipe, including what tools you'd need, to recreate the tunnel of chili hot dogs?

Thanks,

If you could find some 5/1 or larger hot dogs would a small apple corer work?

Yeah, bigger dogs would probably be the best selection.

I wonder if even a small apple corer would be too big. May just using a straw to hollow out the inside?

Perhaps the gourmet franks from Omaha Steaks might be good candidates.

go to the hard ware store and get some stainless steel tubing--comes in a lot of sizes and you can adapt one to go with a pastry bag and fill with it

Those are pretty big dogs, and very good.

This seems like a good plan.  But if you were going to use a plastic straw, you could fill the straw with the chili, and then squeeze it into the dog like toothpaste.  I trim off the tips of the piece that comes out, and then reseal the ends.

If you really wanted to avoid being wasteful, you could even make your chili using the ground up meat you remove from the center of the dog.

Hillshire Farms makes a chili cheese sausage dog. I have not tried them but saw em at the Grocery. All of their other sausage dogs and hot links I have had are good though.

I also find the idea of stuffing or injecting dogs interesting. Rotell cheese dip would be good I think.
