SUPER-DUPER WEENIE????? Fri, 12/18/09 2:56 PM (permalink)
On a recent drip to Boston, my kids got hysterical when they saw a sign for this place while driving on I95 near Fairfield Conn. It was a joke the whole trip. Then the other day, I was surprised to see it featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners,Drive-ins and Dives" He raved about the place. Being from Jersey,I'm particular when it comes to hot dogs. Any reviews out there? Is it worth a stop next time??? The dogs looked average with lots of wild combinations of toppings? Some thoughts, please!

SDW is mostly known for its toppings.  The reason I still go there is for the Salt and Pepper Fries. They are definitely some of the best French Fries in Connecticut.

Here is the Roadfood review.  http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Reviews/357/super-duper-weenie

They have a number of regional dogs ... all authentic ... you should have stopped.

One has not tasted a hotdog till one has eaten a split and grilled dog from Connecticut.

I've been to SDW a number of times. But it was before they switched brands. They always used a beef/pork blend from Miller's Provisions. Very good dog; above average. Then Miller's went out of business and now they're using Hummel's. Still a good dog, but I preferred Miller's. Still way better than average. I'm not a toppings guy, but the toppings at SDW are homemade and very good. The New Englander is an excellent dog.

I remember Mr. Hoffman talking about Rosseler's hot dogs. They are also no longer made. I was able to sample these once at Rawley's. A beef/pork blend that was deep fried. Very good, but I think I would have preferred these split and griddled like they used to be at Jimmie's of Savin Rock. A place that I have never been to, but I can imagine how they used to be based on the descriptions given.

Ah, Roessler's dogs were wonderful. I think that Hummel Brothers hot dogs come fairly close-- although I could never stand Claire Hummel when I sat behind her in third grade at Church Street School in Hamden, Connecticut.

But split and grilled was always the way to go with them -- Hummel's, too.

Split dogs are great on the grill!  The meat, sugars, juices all caramelize together to create a great tasting crust!

Super Duper Weenie is not even close to being average.  All of their toppings are home-made and very tasty.  They hand-cut their french fries.  Plus the co-owner Gary is a hoot.  When he first went from selling his wares from a truck to this store-front, he didn't want to sell diet soda.  He figured that he wasn't selling health food and who was anyone kidding if they ordered a diet drink.  But he was convinced to sell diet soda because many people have to watch their sugar due to diabetes.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this place.
