Le Tub Restaurant in Hollywood, Florida

Last Sunday I drove up to Le Tub restaurant in Hollywood.  This bar and restaurant was made famous a couple of years ago when GQ magazine food writer Alan Richman declared that the burger here was the best that he had ever had, if I recall correctly.  I was eager to try one for myself.

It has a typical Florida rustic waterside restaurant look, with lots of driftwood-looking woodwork:

Looking the other way is a view of the Intracoastal Waterway, with a little pleasure boat maneuvering to dock next door:

What makes this place unusual, though is another decor theme - toilets!

They were everywhere.  I don't think that I have ever been in a toilet-themed restaurant:

Looking for a place to sit, I spotted these two fellows lurking in the shadows.

The Travelin Man & Buffetbuster:

(The cameras were a clue.)

We ordered some seafood gumbo, the Sirloin Steak Burger, with American cheese, and a large order of steak fries.

Of course, being a group of Roadfooders, when the food arrived, out came the cameras!

Seafood Gumbo:

The waitress tried to warn us off by saying that it was very spicy, but I found it to be almost mild, with a good flavor.  I managed to distinguish clams and shrimp in it.  I like it, and recommend it.

The fries arrived before the burgers; hot from the fryer.  They were good - well seasoned, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.  Probably from frozen, but I enjoyed them.

Steak Fries:

Finally, the stars of the show arrived - our cheeseburgers.  These are thirteen ounces, and arrived oozing juices on poppy-seed buns, and smelled just great.  Romaine, onions and a fat slice of tomato accompanied them.

13 Ounce Sirloin Steakburger:

This was a very good cheeseburger, oozing beefiness (is that a word?), with a bit of a crust from some sort of flame grill, and not cooked to death.  We all ordered medium, but I would judge mine to have been medium rare in the middle, which is how I like it.  It comes unseasoned, so I flipped mine and added some table salt.  I am not positive that this is the best large burger that I have ever had, but it was awesome.  The Brickyard burger I had in Daytona Beach a year-and-a-half ago might have been better, but it had bacon and sauteed onions, so that might have been the real difference.

Here is a shot of Buffetbuster's burger cut in half (he did a better job than I did with the puny plastic knife!):

I could not finish mine, but Travelin Man went for the gold.

Look at that face.  That is one FULL Roadfooder!

Satiated Travelin Man:

Of course, someone in the group had room for pie.  Buffetbuster ordered a slice of key lime, and the waitress added extra forks, unbidden.

Key Lime Pie:

The pie is advertised as being made in-house from fresh limes, and it was a good example of key lime pie with whipped cream on top, as opposed to the traditional meringue topping.  It had a nice smooth texture, and was appropriately tart, with a nice graham-cracker crust.  I just had a bite; Buffetbuster might want to comment further.

A good time was had by all, and the people-, boat- and bird-watching were an added attraction.  It might be a little warm in the summer, but the weather was near perfect when we were there.  The Travelin Man & Buffetbuster were great company, I might add.  They were snapping away with their cameras, so I imagine that they will have some photos to post here or elsewhere.

Apparently TTM and BB share an eyewear provider...

That burger looks outstanding.  Is American the only cheese option?

Brad, swiss cheese is the other option.  The menu is hand-written and then photocopied, and I didn't think it would photograph well.

Update:  The menu is on the web site mentioned at the end of the report.

Sorry Joe, wish I had known.

Nice write up and beautiful pics Don!  That really was an excellent burger.  This was clearly the best toilet themed restaurant I have ever tried.  According to the menu, collared shirts are required at night.  So yes, there is a dress code at a restaurant that uses toilets as decorations.

I don't know that I have anything much to add.  Miami Don's report pretty well summed up the afternoon.

It was a very good burger.  I don't know that I would say it is the "best burger in America" - a title which I still throw to Peter Luger.  Of course, there are still some who think that Luger doesn't even serve the best burger in New York City.

Reports abound that Le Tub is a proverbial victim of their own success. I had read that the service is lacking - with something of a "take it or leave it" attitude.  I will say that our server seemed less-than-pleasant - I believe that I used the term "surly" the other day.  But, she was efficient, provided refills on iced tea and checked on us frequently.  She just had the mannerisms of someone who couldn't be bothered.  Whatever.  For me, it did not detract from the meal at all.

Should I find myself back in Hollywood Beach any time soon, I would gladly make another stop at Le Tub.

Yeah, the waitress was not remotely interested in being friendly.  Maybe that was because we were tourists, who knows.

My favorite moment of the meal happened when I asked an elderly gentleman to take a photo of the three of us.  His wife, who had been walking ahead of him, turned around and asked why he was taking the photo.  She must of thought he was photographing us with his own camera.  She was a little embarrassed.

True.  The guy's reaction was priceless.

Wife: "Why are you taking a picture of these people?"

Husband: "Because they ASKED me to."

As if to say "why the #$% else would I be doing it?"  It was great.

What was the time spread between ordering your burgers & actually having them plonked down in front of you...I've read several reports of very long delays between these two events.

    cavandre-
They do warn you that it takes a little bit longer, but it was by no means an excessive amount of time.  20 minutes at the most.  But, we were also among the first people in the door.  When they are packed, I'm guessing it could take much longer.

Yeah, I know I am late to this party, but.....  MiamiDon did such a great job with this report, I only have a few more to add.

You can tell you are in for an interesting experience just from the front entrance.

Believe it or not, this is the second Roadfood type restaurant that I have been to that has a toilet seat

hanging on the outside.  The other was the now closed Waldorf A'Story, in Story, WY, which had a sign that read "Not Just Another Pretty Face" above it.  But, it is the first time I have seen the house motto, "An Inexpensive Place For Folks With Money".

    With really good eyes,

you can see the small, hand written menu.  No doubt, that this is an excellent burger,

one of the best I have ever had.  And before we left, I had a photo of the three of us,

taken by the poor guy who got admonished by his wife.

Looks like a great burger and an interesting place to eat at - who else has a toilet seat theme?  Definitely a place to check out when in Florida later this spring.

Le Tub Burgers are awesome!   Could only eat 1/2.  Had some beer boiled shrimp that were excellent.  Huge shrimp with just the right spices!
