In Richmond VA should I go to MacLean Restaurant or McLeans Restaurant?

Recently, I asked a former Richmond resident for a breakfast/lunch restaurant recommendation. “He said: “Definitely go to MacLean’s ... (or did he say McLeans?).” I’ve narrowed my search to two restaurants located about three miles apart. MacLean Restaurant www.macleanrestaurant.com 6901 Staples Mill Road has been in business for 25+ years. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. McLeans Restaurant http://www.mcleansrestaurant.com/ 4001 West Broad Street has been in business for 30 years. It’s open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both restaurant websites tout their home-style cooking. Menus and pricing seem to be pretty similar at both restaurants. So, which restaurant would you try first?

I've touted McLeans for years. The one on Broad Street. Home of the dirt cheap "Big Breakfast". For choice of breakfast meat, I'd go with the fried bologna, or you can opt for the Country Ham Breakfast too. You can't miss with either.

wanderingjew is, of course, correct, GeoNit, however a newer breakfast option in the former Capital of the Confederacy (and which I went just went to last month but haven't yet had a chance to post about here) is Richmond's... http://www.theblacksheeprva.com/index.htm ...located near Virginia Commonwealth University and at 901 West Marshall Street (804 / 648-1300), the Black Sheep is a rough hewn place waging what it calls the "war of northern ingestion." Breakfast options range from sausage gravy & biscuits to roast duck hash to pork grillades & grits. Breakfasts average about $ 7 to $ 8 and also feature homemade sides like yellow cheese grits, grilled andouille sausage and even homemade applesauce. The place only seats about 25 and, to me, is the breakfast equivalent of the nearby lunch and dinner staple, Croaker Spot (http://www.croakersspot.com/). I couldn't recommend more. P.S. BTW, another breakfast option also on West Broad Street but on the other side of Boulevard from McLean's is the very good and classic Karen's City Diner (http://www.richmondeatsanddrinks.com/?p=49) located at 2237 West Broad Street (804 / 254-1974), FYI.

The one on Broad St is the best, also try the grits and redeye gravy. The Grill at Patterson and Libbie is opening next week. Michale Joseph ownes it and he has always made a great breakfast.

I'm assuming this is at the old Freckles location. I'm still mourning over the loss of this true Roadfood gem. I hope they have spoon bread at the new place!

Just an FYI that Richmond, Virginia's great McLeans retaurant moved this fall from its original location (held for over 30 years) to its new location at 3205 West Broad Street (about a 1/2 mile east of its former locale), FYI.
