Todays NY Times has an article about Mayor Bloomberg wherein it is mentioned that he likes to order a "coffee rubbed NY strip steak" at a favorite restaurant in Bermuda.

Anyone out there know how to prepare a coffee rubbed steak? If so, I'd appreciate it you would post a recipe.

Cheers, John

Thanks, Greymo, I think I'll give that a try sometime soon - although we generally prefer our steaks with nothing more than salt and pepper, we are always open to try something new to us.

i pretty much always add coffee to any rub for beef or pork. i don't use rub on steaks, but i do on skirt or flank or tritip when grilling and i think it's awesome on grilled pork tenderloin. what it brings to the party is a hint of bitter to the taste and a little richness to the aroma.

I've never used coffee as an addition to my rub but have used it in my Chile Colorado as an ingredient. Guess I'll have to try it.

            Thanx for the tip!

I was thinking of trying it on a small sirloin first BUT, I'm not going to register just to get a recipe.

I have done it a few times. Made a rub of coffee, a little salt and pepper. I go started out very light on the coffee  but add a little more now. It makes a tasty steak.

I have used Cola and Dr Pepper for a short time marinade for steaks with some success. Works well over a longer soak-cycle for Pork Butts.

                  Hey John---

A few yeaars ago someone on this very site mentioned that he marinates his steaks in coffee.  Said they were great that way.  Learned it from his wifes mother or something.  Sounded kinda goffy to me, but there might be something to it.

Blomberg can afford the best so maybe it is worth trying.

A youtube friend of mine owns a spice company on Long Island NY called http://www.tangospice.com/ he has a wonderful spice rub that's sold around NY called Midnight Espresso. It has, among other spices, ground espresso coffee. It is really good on beef. His website shows where you can find it. You really don't get a coffee flavor but it does add a complex flavor to the meat.

I'd only do it if you could use Sweet & Low and 1/2 & 1/2 in it! Sounds too bitter for my taste.
