I-95-The BBQue Trail? Sat, 05/8/10 11:16 AM (permalink)
Mrs QFan & I are heading north to the DC area in June. We would love for any Q-savy road fooders to tip us off to some good BBQue within shouting distance of I95. For instance, a few yrs back we found a little out-of-the-way place in the small town of Manning, SC due to a tip from a RF-er who had read about it in one of the Stern's books. They had an extraordinary buffet and excellent Carolina-style, vinegar-based que.
So anywhere from the Daytona Bch/Jacksonville area to northern VA along I-95 is fair game. QFan has even been known to drive 75 miles or more out of the way to find outstanding que.
Please let me hear from you many RF Q-fans out there who've driven this route!

Bonita Springs, FL

P.S. Our first stop in GA will probably be the Ga Pig in Brunswick. Been there many times; hope it's still respectable!

Buz and Ned's BBQ in Richmond is just off I-95, and is quite good.

        Hi MD!

We'll probably go up I-75 to I-4 and over to Daytona. Sometimes we have taken I-75 all the way to Lake City and then cut over I-10 to Jax. We usually try to avoid the 301 cutover because of the speed traps in Starke & Waldo.

Drive right on by GAPIG and up the road to Don's Lexington Style BBQ in Puller GA. It is in  a little old DQ only a mile off I 95 - easy off easy on. We think their BBQ sandwich and sweet tea is as good as we've ever had any place.

          Cheers, John

Holt Lake BBQ & Seafood in Smithfield, NC, (Exit 90 - NC96/US301/US701) is very good BBQ just off I95 and has good seafood also for those who don't care for BBQ or have had their fill (can that be possible?)

Just up the road a piece in Dortches, NC, is a veritable Valhalla of pork products: Smith's Red & White Market (Exit 141 - NC43).  Smith's is a venerable grocery store/butcher within spitting distance of I95, just north of Rocky Mount. They do all their hog butchering every Tuesday and make some of the best East Carolina air-dried sausage (sage and red pepper) and BBQ I've ever had. Around the holidays it gets so busy with people coming off the interstate to buy their sausage that they have to have police directing traffic and the line for the sausage counter snakes through the store. They have two clerks who sell nothing but sausage during the rush (30,000 lbs a week!). Most of the time, though, it's just a small town grocer who closes at 6 PM and is closed on Sundays.  Also worth mentioning is their chicken pastry, chicken salad and pimento cheese.  Truly as good as Granny used to make.

                Hi CTF!
I assume you're a que fan yourself since you read my original post. However, I'm having a little difficulty understanding your message. Can you clarify for me a little bit? Thanks for taking the time to respond!

My absolute favorite is Parker's BBQ in Wilson, NC (about 5 miles off I-95) I live in Pennsylvania and travel to Myrtle Beach every October.  We stopped at Parker's about 25 years ago and haven't missed a visit since.  We plan out trips to stop on the way to Myrtle Beach and also on the way back to PA.  Best Carolina Que around and the fried chicken is also superb.

I own a Barbeque Restaurant that is one of the Restaurants featured in the Stern's last Roadfood edition, it's about 60 mi. from I95 northwest of Baltimore, not allowed to name my place here, no mystery meant!

Excellent pulled pork, ice cold beer, great atmosphere, well worth the detour.

If you're going to be visiting Emmitsburg for the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seaton or driving up to Gettysburg, PA, give Chubby's a try.  It's probably the best BBQ thereabouts since the Mountaindale General Store is no longer the standard.  But I wouldn't categorize it as a "must-do" destination in and of itself.

Hey CTF, thanks for the clarification! I looked up Chubby's in the current RoadFood last night. Impressive!
I hope we get up that way during our stay in DC. What w/ relatives, friends, grandkids, etc, just depends on the agenda of what all else is going on. Lived in DC area for 23 yrs and I know that is beautiful country up around Gettysburg area.

A few yrs back (when QFan's daughter was in school at Williamsburg), there used to be a que joint in Ashland, VA-right off I95. I believe it was called the smoked pig, or something similar? Anybody know if it's still there?

Was at Chubby's last Saturday and it was great as usual.  Hoped to have the chili dog after reading the 'hot dogs in Nothern Virginia' thread, but fell back to my old standby of pulled pork and brisket.

Kraut with pork, greens and the Chubby baked beans for sides and a mason jar of draft root beer.

For dessert, went to Keystone Fireworks just over the PA line.
