Has anyone seen this? Cheezewit? Heated opinions on "the best" aside, it looks like a good resource by an obsessed connoisseur. http://www.bestcheesesteaks.com/

I had contributed to the site back in 2000, but some info was lost when the site was redone last year. I've been kicking around the idea of starting my own site on the same topic for some time...just need time and a good website designer.

Well, you are certainly obsessed enough to have your own website on the subject. I stumbled across that one looking to see if John's in Frazer was still around. I used to live in Exton years ago and remember them having a passable sandwich. I think they had a version with pepperoni on it. As an aside, my son, when just a little tyke, claimed to have invented the bacon cheesesteak which we dubbed the "baco-steako" (I'd put a little C in a circle next to it if I knew how.)

John's isn't too bad. It has moved across Rt. 30 into a larger building.

Does anyone know of any decent cheesesteaks anywhere near Western Massachusetts? Or are all hopes dashed? I've heard that there is a Quickies in West Springfield, but it's a chain, so I never went.

I don't know Marcbla, people get real defensive about their "best." We are going to have to take CheeseWit up on his offer for the tour so we can be properly edumacated.

I need to jump in here. First off, it's not Jimmy's, it's Jim's. No big deal about getting the name wrong. I will say that "The Best Cheesesteak" is definitely a matter of personal taste. That is the reason for my Cheesesteak Tour. I will give you a chance to taste different versions and make your own decision. The tour is ready to embark anytime now.

Question to our resident cheesesteak gourmand: the cheesesteak website linked in the original post displays a graphic along the left edge with two different cheesesteaks. No problem there, but: 1) Neither sandwich appears to have cheese on them. Look closely. Are these even real cheesesteaks? 2) One of them appears to have catsup squeezed on to it. CATSUP? Does anyone really put catsup on these things? It sounds awful....

Well, first of all, you DON'T have to get a CHEESEsteak, you can get a steak sandwich with or without fried onions. I sometimes put ketchup on my cheesesteaks, other times I'll put hot sauce on, and other times I'll order a pizza steak which is a steak sandwich with pizza sauce and that you can have as a cheesesteak or just a steak sandwich.

Ok, so not everyone is opposed to ketchup....*shudder* That said, the sitename is bestcheesesteaks. :-). I found it odd that the sandwiches pictured aren't (to my eye) really cheesesteaks.

I always put ketchup on one half of my cheesesteak and leave the other half plain. Then I eat from both ends. (By the way in the Lehigh Valley where I live cheesesteaks automatically come with tomato sauce- in otherwords the standard steak is what is called a pizza steak in Philadelphia.)

TJ, we still love you. Truth be told, In Philly where, at least at 9th & Passyunk, they serve sliced ribeye, not the chopped into little pieces that other places serve, and everyplace in Baltimore, I add only ketchup, and a few drops of hot sauce, more will melt your brain, to my provywitextra. In Baltimore, ordering a cheesesteak will really get you a cheesesteak hoagie, meat chopped into little bits, on a lousy roll, with lettuce, tomato, mayo, hots, and fried onions. Adding the ketchup to one of these mixes it with the mayo and you sort of end up with what I've always known as russian dressing, and it makes a great drippy mess. Growing up, my mother always made this russian dressing, and mixed in some relish, which then made it into Thousand Island. That's still my favorite dressing. She also served us plain spaghetti to which we always poured on ketchup. Today I can't even imagine eating it that way. I guess you figured out I'm not Italian.

Does anyone really put catsup on these things? It sounds awful.... I'm with signman on this one -- Prove with Extra -- and I often put Ketchup on mine. In fact, if I'm taking it home I've been known to put one of those newfangled gourmet ketchups (like Ketchipotle) on it just for fun. I haven't seen the picture that you're referring to but I have noticed that many places put the cheese on the roll rather than the beef, especially if it's a sliced cheese like Provolone. Personally, I like the cheese on top or throughout but you get what you get. My current favorite is Steve's Prince of Steaks on Bustleton but I'm always on the lookout for a new "favortie" Finally, anyone who hasn't seen the Holly Eats website should follow pogophiles good advice and check it out. Holly Rocks! Especially when it comes to cheesesteaks!

Got to eat some cheesesteaks while I was home a few weeks ago. Good place is Carmen's Deli in Delran, NJ. They make a mean Cheesesteak Hoagie, which in that neck of the woods is a cheesesteak with lettuce and tomato, no mayo or anything else as mentioned above. Going to school in Philly (and spending waaaayyyy too much time hanging out in South Philly) my pals and I always liked Pat's more than Jim's. Jim's always had this faint, cleaning fluid smell when you walked past.
