One of these opened in Port Hueneme pronounced (Port Why-nee-mee) near Oxnard. I stopped on my way to work got some and a cup of coffee and they are surprisingly very very good.

You are right, an interesting story. There have been a number of discussions on Spudnuts here on Roadfood. The only one I've been to is the one in Sacramento. When I asked if they were really made from potatoes the help stopped speaking English.
