Does anyone know whether Chello Oyster House in Guilford, Connecticut is still operating? Chello's is/was located on the Post Road. When I was a kid my standard order, after the (bakers) dozen clams on the half shell, was fried scallops.

According to what I could find, this place has been gone for years. Mrs. Chello died last fall.

That's a shame. I was just a kid, but I really loved eating there. Of course my favorite thing about Chello's was the fact that the driveway and the parking areas in front and in back were covered with crushed oyster shells, and out back there was a pille of whole oyster shells at least ten feet high that I used to clamber over till my mother would make me stop.

We ate there a few times - "shore dinner" followed up with Indian pudding. The last time I was through that area I tried to find it, but all the old landmarks were gone, and, except for "The Place", nee "Whitey's ", everything was strange to me - and , as it happened, "The Place" was not open that day. Several years back my wife and I stopped at The Place with my grandson. I wanted to show them what used to be Whitey's. It was in the same place, but it just wasn't the same.
