Another vote for the Born Loser.  Though Dilbert is probbaly the one that has made me laugh out loud the most.

There was also a sports themed one that I used to love but I can't remember the name of it.  Tank something maybe.  Macnamara?

It was Tank McNamara though I don't remember what it was about. The one I liked way back was Gil Thorp who was a coach and all around outdoors guy.

Tank McNamara was a retired football player who became a broadcaster, but that's about all I remember outside of that the word "fumble" might've caused him to flip out a little.  I read it in the Rockford Register Star in the '70s and '80s.

Were Gil Thorp and Mark Trail related?

I just looked up Gil Thorp on Wikipedia and found out it's still in production! I read it in the 60's and 70's. Gil is a high school coach who now also advises on all teen matters.

For me right now, funniest is "Pearls Before Swine". It's so weird! I love the strange animal characters, right now the plaid zebra who is the product of a "causal"  mating of the horizontal zebra and the vertical zebra. So silly stupid that it's funny.

I really miss TRAVELS WITH FARLEY by the late Phil Frank...this used to appear in the San Francisco Chronicle (they *might* still run his cartoons). Phil was a resident of Sausilito on a houseboat...his great strip was never syndicated...

MY favorite single panel cartoon is one by Unger...

In the background is a Spanish ship with a few explorers standing around

In the foreground are 2 Indians...one is saying to the other: "His name is Chris Columbus...says he's only going to be here for a few days"...

My current favorite strip is Richard Thompson's "Cul de Sac". If you look for it currently though, it's not his work - he's been going through a treatment regimen for Parkinson's, and in a nice case of comic-artist solidarity, several others are standing in doing his strip in one-week stints. Michael Jantze (The Norm) just finished a run, and in the lineup is Stephen Pastis (Pearls Before Swine).

Now "Mark Trail" has been (unintentionally) funny for some time. The strip has had a lifelong mission statement to teach us about wildlife, but it's been giving us pet bears, deers, and raccoons, wildly miscolored birds, and plenty of bizarre misinformation.

Thanks, Davydd. I saw that this morning. At least the zebras speak English, the crocs are really hard to understand sometimes. But I agree with Stephan, it's hard coming up with 365 ideas a year!

My favorite was Nancy--when Ernie Bushmiller drew it.  He drew the strip from 1919 until his death in 1983.  As soon as the strip started being drawn by other cartoonists after Bushmiller died, it was a travesty.  It died a long, lingering death.  (I don't know; the strip may still be around, but it is dead as far as I'm concerned.) Gone was the simple charm of the strip, its humor and particularly how its details were drawn with such meticulous care.  The cartoonists that followed didn't even bother keeping the soul of the strip; instead Nancy became something from another planet.  Too bad.

Does anybody read Tom Tomorrow and the Modern World...???

It's a satirical look at the quirks of our modern society, yet drawn in a classic Mary Worth and or Stan Lee style...usually found in independant, progressive, and alternative papers...

I like Phil Foglio's "Girl Genius". Available in paperback or 3 times weekly online.
