Celebrities & other famous folks at Roadfood Restaurants Sat, 05/21/11 11:02 PM (permalink)
I recall a recent thread on encounters with celebrities, but how about Roadfood encounters with celebrities and other famous people?

Tonight we decided to eat at the famous Solly's (celebrating 75 years!!!! in business) while we were helping our boys move.  We walk in and right in front of us were 5 open seats at the counter - perfect!

But who is that guy sitting next to us? Our creepy neighbor? No, he died last year.  Oh yeah, it is our senior U.S. Senator and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, Herb Kohl.  I never would have guessed he was a Roadfoodie.  The Senator kept to himself, but returned greetings from the other patrons in a friendly manner.

Butter burgers beyond compare and absolutely great apple pie, stop at Solly's before their 100th anniversary celebration.

Herb Kohl eats everywhere! I sat next to him at the now closed Grenadiers years ago. He loves Milwaukee eats!

Chuck full O'Nuts. corner of Madison and E54th St (if I remember correctly) in NY City.  Sat opposite Katherine Hepburn who was having a late lunch of Date Nut Bread with Cream Cheese and either tea or coffee.  We nodded to each other like old friends.

And in almost that same seat John Malkovich talking with a guy I think was his agent.  They ignored me completely.

Had lunch with PAVAROTTI-- he stood on one end of a Sabbrett wagon while I stood on the other.  The vendor ignored us both.   It was at Columbus Circle and PAVAROTI ate two dogs while I had only one.  It
pays to be a big shot in the City With 8 Million Stories.

And here I thought politicians only went to Roadfood restaurants while campaigning, just to show they are regular folk.  This makes me like Senator Kohl.  Of course, who wouldn't like a Solly's butter burger?

On my last visit to Solly's, I had the cinnamon carmel apple pie and it was fantastic.  Is that what you had or was it straight apple pie?

Cliff - It was the cinnamon caramel apple pie. Almost (just almost) made us skip the stop at Kopp's.

Obviously, you made the right choice!

Mariton and I split the excellent banana malt at Solly's, along with the slice of pie.  So, we didn't get to Kopp's that day until hours later.

I did see Jimmy Carter at Manuel's, today's spotlighted joint. He was with a couple of big, protective friends but had time to chat a bit with some folks in my group. Didn't see what he was having; he was at his daughter's birthday party in the next room, and I hadn't received an invitation.

Many years ago, my brother-in-law dined at our local Mahwah Bar and Grill, to find he was back to back with Bill Parcells while he was with the  NY Giants.  A simple nod from the Coach was all that was needed to give my relative one of his best nights ever dining.   Food's great, so was a win-win situation anyway, and glad I can even walk there.

Last year the wife and I marched in the New York Steuben Day Parade.  We got there a little early and looked for a place to get a cup of coffee.  We found a little place across from the Carlyle Hotel called 3 Guys.  Me, being hard of hearing, couldn't figure out why the wife was so excited.  Two booths behind me was sitting Tom Selleck.

I wonder how many celebrities and public figures, especially those who travel a lot, have a bit of a Roadfood streak but keep quiet about it.

Used to be a small cafe called Coogies in Sherman Oaks, CA.  I was there every morning for my cup of coffee.

I was friends with the owner and one day Dick Van Patten came in.

The place was full and he was demanding a refill for his orange juice.

Everyone was being helped in order as it should be so when he became a little bit too loud in his demands....

I got up from my table, went behind the counter and got him another glass of orange juice.

Don't know if Fellini's Pizza here in Atlanta is a Roadfood restaurant, but it should be. Some many years back I was eating there and I'm pretty sure so was Quentin Crisp, of all people. I didn't know many other old folks who wore a black fedora and cape...and it certainly wasn't Orson Welles.
There are a number of people you may recognize but wouldn't venture to go up and talk to...some time earlier I'd seen Frank Zappa sitting across the way at Second Chance, a music bar in Ann Arbor, Mich. Just couldn't see myself talking to him...

Joseph----that is an amazing bit of detective work on your part.
A lot of people in show biz should have that first name.  Girls
could be called Britney or something.

If I could choose one celebrity to run into in a Roadfood restaurant, Scarlett Johansson would most likely be my choice.  After all, she does know where the best turkey club sandwiches are!
