Marked down meats

Do any of you purchase marked down meats as they reach the expiration dates at grocery stores? I occasionly do if the look fresh and are a good buy. I have purchased lamb chops at Sam's and the have been very good. I live in an area that has a lot of Publix markets and noticed that they do not mark down their meats. I have often wondered what they do with them.

When I was working I used to visit the local Ralph's (Krogers) in Sherman Oaks. I had to get there before the firemen to get the markdowns as they bought them up. I was lucky enough to be able to grill what I bought for lunch at work so what I bought was eaten within hours. Nothing ever wrong with it and it was a great savings. Of course I save more now not buying any.

I buy marked down meat every chance that I get.........................we have some great meals for much less money. For example, last evening, we enjoyed delicious thick veal loin chops which I purchased for 4.95 per pound!

Liability. The expired food goes into locked dumpster to prevent dumpster diving or is composted. There is too much liability involved to donate short dated or expired foods. One can thank the legal community for their efforts that have deprived food banks, homeless shelters, and the needy from much needed donations of short dated food.

I just finished a beautiful NY Strip which cost me @2 vs $5 50 in the same case just two days ago. I try to buy items that are going out of date first then I buy the accompanents. Tonight I had the steak with sauted Mushroom caps. Tell me that doesnt sound good. I have frozen "discount" meats and find them just as tasteful later. Needless to say it doesnt go into my cart unless it looks perfect

I have a friend who has figured out the markdown timing for all the chain supermarkets in town and that's all he buys. Days of the week, time of day they do it, etc. He pounces like a lion that hasn't eaten in 5 days!.

I regularly buy marked down meats at Kroger and serve them that evening or freeze them until I am ready to serve them. We have never had any problems doing this.

This forum is where you can get recommendations on favorite eating spots based on location and travel routes. And this 'Misc." sub-forum is "Food Related". Entirely valid question where we talk about topics, you know... "food related".

People don't read a one line "manual" that very clearly describes what each section is about and you think they'll read an operator's manual?

I bought a marked-down strip steak yesterday and grilled it for dinner last night. Since I'm still around to type this I can only assume that it has caused me no harm. Or that the beer killed any nasties that might've come after me. Brad

I do buy marked down meat. It's a good savings. At my local A&P they put a sticker on the package which makes it easier to spot. At my local Shop Rite, they just change the regular price sticker so you have to be alert in spotting the reduced price. Saturday I spotted baby lamb chops that were marked down. I was able to get enough for my whole family. It was a nice treat!

Stores around here don't do marked down meat that is getting close to expiring...they just do weekly sales on different meats. Which is the only time I buy them. I wish they did, though...I'd be all over it! Especially beef, which is skyrocketed to the point where I honestly can't remember the last time I had beef at home other than ground chuck. Even on sale it tops $5 a pound at best.

We buy it all the time. Actually, we refer to that section of the store as the "rotted meat bin." Never have had a problem and get some really good steaks (esprecially Tbones and porterhouse) at great prices.

MetroplexJim Mrs. Metro won't let me and I have better sense than to even attempt a rational argument after "No!" is said by the one who must be obeyed! that statement just knocked you off the REAL MAN list real fast. the only store around here that marks down meats is Food Lion, & I buy them when I see them & cook them ASAP. MY WIFE loves steaks 3 nights in a row.

Every chance I get. Usually I use it that night, otherwise within a day or else I freeze it.
