Lt. Colombo passes on Sat, 06/25/11 4:53 AM (permalink)
Peter Falk, aka Colombo, passed away Friday. He was 83.

Mr. Falk, who had dementia, died at his home in Beverly Hills, according to a statement from Larry Larson, an attorney for Mr. Falk's wife.
In a more than 50-year acting career that included Broadway, movies and television, Mr. Falk appeared in more than 50 feature films. Husbands (1970) and A Woman Under the Influence (1974), both of which were written and directed by Mr. Falk's close friend John Cassavetes, provided Mr. Falk with two of his best-known dramatic film credits.
Early in his film career, Mr. Falk received two Academy Award nominations for best supporting actor -- for playing a vicious mob assassin in Murder, Inc. (1960) and for his portrayal of a gangster's right-hand man in Frank Capra's comedy-drama Pocketful of Miracles (1961).

Did you know that Brinks was once the Pittston Company, which started a couple blocks away from me as the Pittston Stove Company?  Long before I was born of course.

Ironically, it was called "The Brinks Job" (!978)

                    TV TRIVIA:

The debut episode of Colombo in 1971 was directed by 25-year-old Steven Spielberg in one of his earliest directing roles.

Falk recalled the episode to Spielberg biographer Joseph McBride:

"Let's face it, we had some good fortune at the beginning. Our debut episode, in 1971, was directed by this young kid named Steven Spielberg. I told the producers, Link and Levinson, This guy is too good for Columbo. . . ."

Peter falk read the scripts for Colombo and knew right away it was a career role. Colombo helped spark a lifelong love of mysteries for me and Falk helped create one of the two most interesting television  detectives of all. And let's not forget his small but pivotal role in "The princess bride", a movie that helped spark both of my son's love for film. R.I. P. Lt.

I had the good fortune to have a nice chat with him in 1972 at The Hamburger Hamlet in Beverly Hills, very nice unassuming man, great actor! May he rest in peace!
