Here is some pretty dramatic video of a crash test conducted by the insurance institute for highway safety. They don't build em like they used to.....fortunately. I know I've often said the old cars were stronger, heavier, more steel, safer etc. Apparently ain't so.

Wow,  a pretty frightening video to watch, either car, but the newer one does withstand the crash better.  I would have thought the older may be better for the reasons you cite.

This video certainly makes a case for new cars. Still, a couple I know have a sharp '59 Chevy coupe which is really cool...

I guess that doesn't bode well for "Detroit Iron"

you guys should remember one thing....... that is a specific car vs specific car scenario....... appears to be media/insurance manipulation at its best.....

lets take my '73 f250 and put it up against a prius and see what happens....

According to what I found on another forum the 1959 chevy only outweighed the 2009 Malibu by 200 lbs so I think they were comparing apples to apples. Your 73 f-250 against a Prius doesn't seem like a fair fight. How about your 1973 f-250 against a 2011 F-250. How do you think that would come out :)

I don't know how they would fair, but I would put my 1976 Scout International up against most anything built today. I'd put my 1960 Twin I-Beam Custom Cab 100 Ford P/U against most vehicles built recently, as long as they were in the weight clss. I wouldn't put my 1966 Simca 1000 up against anything, not even a motor scooter LOL. Nor would I put my 1966 Triumph Herald Classic Sedan againss anything. As it would break, and it is hard to get parts for. And as for my 1973 Dodge Challanger Convertible 383, it onlys comes out of the garage for special occassions, like parades, kids and grandkids proms and weddings, or when I just want to show off. Which happens
more then I would like to admit. We will take it to Hot August Nights in Reno this year for the 15th year. Will drive it to Reno, no trailers allowed.

Rest assured that an old pickup will just allow your family to have a closed casket funeral if you hit something solid instead of a small car that the truck basically drove over. Modern vehicles are made to disipate energy, if your driving a vehicle that doesn't crumple around you and is that rigid in an impact with a like sized object or a tree at even 40mph you are dead instantly. Maybe it was the old school seatbelt without pre-tensioners that allowed your skull to slam off the solid steel A-pillar and shatter lie a watermelon. Maybe it was your Aorta ripping from your heart as your internal organs are instantly decelerated from 40mph to 0 mph in 3 inches. Maybe the sheer weight of your brain slamming into your skull at 100+g's left you brain dead. Fact is you are not safer in an old truck, between antique suspension designs, cab on frame design, lack of TCS,STC,tricky handling during emergency manuvers, etc. YOu'll be much safer daily driving the Prius.

                    bob,
Thanks for posting some facts.  When I see the auctions on TV I think I want to buy a 60's muscle car.  But then I look at the stopping distances of say a 60's Camaro vs. a new one, and no way.

Good lord, I just watched about 20 of those crash test videos. I have to admit, I felt a bit like Tommy Boy thinking it was awesome to see something destroyed but the thought of a person being in any of those is some scary stuff. I'd stick with my newer car, thanks though.
