Radio station playlist Sun, 07/31/11 6:50 PM (permalink)
I know almost everything is packaged and there is very little left in original programming in radio anymore. In fact you could probably call it fast food radio. We've got a new "oldies" station in the area that I've been listening to while running errands etc. and it seems no matter what time of day or night I get in the car I hear the same songs over and over. For example I think they play Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive" more then it was ever played when it was popular. Anyone know how long one these stations playlist is? I swear I think it's only about 25 songs played over and over.

Radio stations these days generally have playlists of about 200 - 300 songs with varying rotations.  You're right, it's annoying and boring.  When I was on the air, we had tight playlists, but not quite that tight.

I had two different radio shows in my (very) brief college career in radio. The first one I programmed myself which l thoroughly enjoyed, the second was tightly programmed with no room for substitutions or requests. BORING. Same songs almost every day (college/alternative/shoegazer "rock"). Glad I didn't follow that career path. I can barely listen to the radio anymore.

thats why years ago I got a lifetime subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio.
all music, no commercials and a neverending playlist.
I've NEVER listened to broadcast radio since.

remember that if the station has actual live "dj's" each one will want to play the biggest of the hits..... i have heard the same song several times just a few songs apart after the jocky switch takes place in the afternoon on a couple of stations...

i like burning my own "cd's" ...i actually use sd cards and thumb drives in the truck, i dont have an ipod, probably never will.... i have a digital media head unit in my truck.... and am putting one into the food truck as well..... i think that in a combination with xm/sirius should just about cover it

I got spoiled years ago with NYC's WNEW-FM (107.3)...nothing close to a playlist with Scott Muni, Jonathan Schwartz, Pete Fornatle(?), the Night Bird, etc.

sk bob, I also listen to Sirius, but they do have a repeating playlist. Listen to CH 4 on the weekend.Over and over and over they play the same songs. And it's the same every weekend. Not so obvious during the week, or maybe I don't listen as much then.

I think the car dealers would go under if they couldn't advertise on am-fm. It seems like around here 2 of 3 commercials are for auto dealers.
