Is New Orleans the New Hotdog Mecca? I think so Fri, 08/19/11 5:43 AM (permalink)
Well, after 11 years of being the Famous Hotdog & Sausage Guys based in London (but originally from New Orleans, I finally made it back to the US of A.  I've got a place called "Dat Dog" on 5031 Rue Freret in the City that Care forgot.  I gotta say its the best thing I've ever done.  Being the hotdog guy is quite an honour.  Check us out on datdognola.com.  We also were featured in the Wall St. Journal Dat Dog as one of the top gourmet hotdog places in the US.  Go figure!  Its been an amazing 25 weeks since we opened and the door just never closes, the queue just never stops.    I welcome any and all from Roadfood to visit us if and when.  New Orleans is a great place to visit and I believe Dat Dog is on the list of "must do's".  Oh forgot, check us out on yelp.com.  Skip Murray,

He now has  three separate posts touting his own place.

      I wish you good luck.

I don't go to New Orleans for a hot dog, (or Burger King) but maybe the locals will like them.

I still miss the New Orleans Takee Outee places of the seventies.

$5 is a lot of money for a hot dog.  I hope you do well.

I once had a discussion here with the maker of funny videos, jb007. He showed how to make bratwurst using mass-market grocery store bratwurst. I wondered why some of those mom-and-pop sausage makers found along I-10 heading west of New Orleans couldn't make decent hot dogs and bratwurst since they make such great varieties of Louisiana sausage. If that is what Dat Dog is using, the price is justified. New Orleans is still a place whare a restaurant can get decent rolls, not just the foodservice stuff from the likes of
                      Flowers.

Even if they are bringing in refrigerated product from the likes of Schwaller & Weber, its a good deal. I just don't think they are using imported meats - who is bringing the stuff in?

Sorry, but I go to NOLA quite often and hot dogs are not on my list of things to eat!  Gumbo, jambalaya, coffee and beignets, crawfish, dirty rice, etc.

For me, too, and anything on the menu at Commander's Palace and Brennan's.
