St. Petersburg ... GLUTEN FREE ROADFOODING

I know we've been on this topic, but I have a specific challenge.
 
I'll be in St. Petersburg, Florida for FOUR DAYS and circumstances require 100% gluten-free Roadfooding.
 
The general area is St. Pete ... Beaches, a little north, a little west and a little south.
 
From what I'm reading gluten ain't exactly good eats for anyone ... more on that is appreciated too.
 
 
 
 

I was diagnosed with celiacs disease ( no gluten) three years ago. The good news is that you can eat almost anything if you try and find it. There are gluten free restaurants but most good restaurants will work with you and find gluten free choices. Some cuisines work better than others. One problem is anything needing roux so be careful of Cajun and creole food. In St. petersburg any good restaurant will work with you. Grilled fish, salads, grilled meats, etc. No soy sauce unless its wheat free. Check out Tarpon Springs for Greek food nearby. Lots of gluten free choices

I'm in late, but I just saw this. I also have Celiac. I find that the more upscale restaurants are better at coping with gluten free than the Mom-pop ones. Cross contamination is almost a given in the mom-pops. Also, many of the better restaurants are now training their wait staff and kitchen staff to be more aware of food allergies, especially problems with gluten.  

For "Glutton Free" in St Pete's, I would contact The Ancient Mariner.  He would never engage in one of the "Seven Deadly Sins".

When you get there, go to a Health food/products store and ask them for recommendations. They will know. Also you can get snacks to eat in your room

Gregg,  if you have been diagnosed by a doctor with celiac disease, like 'smokestack lightening' and 'mbrookes', then the links provided are good resources.  Celiac disease is a very serious disease and you'll need good medical treatment, not just avoiding glutens.  However, for those without fully diagnosed celiac disease, the case against gluten is a bit over stated like the case for anti-oxidants, vitamins B, C, D and E, and other supplements or the case against carbs, coffee, red meat, etc.   These are typically supported by pseudo-science, by people looking to take your moeny for unncessary products. 

Fortunately for you, I am one of the few Roadfooders who has actually been to St. Petersburg, although back when I was there it was still called Leningrad.  As I recall all the restaurants were state run and there wasn't much of a choice.  Gluten-shmuten, you ate what they gave you and you liked it.  Generally the cabbage borscht was pretty good, and they could make a decent piece of chicken and boil a potato like nobody's business, but...
