What food-gifts have you given? Sat, 10/22/11 9:12 AM (permalink)
Back in February, I had a Giordano's pizza shipped from Chicago to a friend in St. Louis for his birthday.  They partially cook it, then pack it in dry ice and ship it. $20 for the pizza, $30 for shipping, but worth it!  He totally wasn't expecting it either, because every other year we've gotten each other books, DVDs, and video games.  I needed the cooperation of his wife, since someone had to be there to receive and refrigerate it as soon as possible.  The dry ice was just about completely gone when it arrived, she told me.

Last week I had a selection of German sausages, German cheese, and German soft pretzels shipped to another friend in Iowa for her birthday.  Sort of a personal post-Oktoberfest Oktoberfest.

Food is just so much fun to give!  What edibles have you bestowed upon friends and family?

I sent my cousin in North Carolina a "chicago hot dog" package fron Vienna Beef. Hot dogs, buns, green neon relish, sport peppers, pickles, celery salt and neon green relish.
I sent some friends in Indiana some string cheese and cheese curds fresh from a local dairy.
I have also put together Wisconsin made product baskets and sent them to friends on the east coast and New Mexico. I love doing all of this!!
I have also received some great food gifts-fudge from Michigan, country ham and Dukes mayo from North Carolina, real maple syrup from Vermont, hatch chiles from New Mexico, some wonderful sauces from a friend in California.........

Omaha steaks, Wine of the month club from ?, Burghers sausage and bacon, gourmet hot dogs from ?,  all to my daughter who got her first apartment in Arlington Va. last year...she was very appreciative but finally had to say, "dad, I don't have any more storage space"
The reason for the ? is brain fart!

For a dear friend last Christmas: a jar of my canned tomatoes, a bag of fresh gnocchi, cookies that I made, a Starbuck's Christmas mug with Christmas beans, all in a Corning Ware bowl lined with a Christmas kitchen towel.

I have done home-made popcorn salt, Cocoa, and a cookbook of stuff I have made over the years (and kept a record of who was there - they all got a copy).  We have deer hunters on the property, but I broke down and sent Mail-order Venison sausage.  This year I'm thinking of a Penzeys Spice gift box along with a gift Certificate ( at least for our Us friends/relatives).

BTW.the cost of printing the handwritten Cookbook was about what a Best-Seller goes for (with no Amazon discount!)

My wife and I travel a lot, both together and individually for business.  But we have a needy cat, luckily we have a great next-door neighbor how is willing to visit Kitty when we are gone.  We usually bring her (the neighbor, not the cat) food related gifts from wherever we go.  Recent ones include:
            Ice wine from Toronto/Niagara Falls
            Cajun spices from New Orleans
            Tequila and vanilla from Mexico
            Sourdough bread from San Francisco

My wife makes the World's Best Fudge every Christmas and we send it to Friends & Relatives. We've also sent Popcorn Tins, Edible Fruit arrangements, Cheesecakes, Candy Apples and Pecans in gift tins.

Every year my family (and now quite a large number of friends) get gingerbread I make using my great-grandmother's recipe. Also cookie trays, usually at least six different kinds. My dad and stepmom are addicted to caramel corn from the local place here, so I usually give them several varieties for birthdays and Christmas. Baskets of hot sauces, spices, vinegars, etc. from parts of the country the recipient isn't from. My cookies have been sent to various places in the US and Canada as well for various reasons. And of course Ryba's fudge from Mackinac Island (gotta be Ryba's, or don't bother).

Not food, exactly, but my standard wedding gift has become a cookbook full of family and other tried and true recipes.

I've sent homemade fruitcakes in special ceramic baking loaf pans that I'd purchased during the year.

                  Boxes of See's Candy

Years ago when lucite was in vogue I'd fill up the sections of a one piece lazy susan type of dish with different wrapped candies.

Taken to peoples homes...  homemade pies in stoneware pie plates that I leave at the home.

Assorted jars of brushetta, tepanades, olives, Ajvar with different types of crackers.

Outside of shipping relatives boxed citrus, most of mine has been my own signature packaged mixes and soups to co-workers and baked goods to my surrounding neighbors.

Deli meats from Katz's complete with rye bread and mustard from Katz's for my relatives in Alabama. Similarly to these poor folks who can't get good deli lox and bagels from Russ and Daughter's (just down the street from Katz's ;-)  Crumb cake from Long Island, local single soda servings from a great online soda store. We are big fans of local food and it's great you can get so many specialties delivered to your door, or sent to folks that don't travel much!!

I've given a ham, Creole Royale fruitcake (excellent), honey from a local beekeeper, Redi-base chicken and beef base, and preserves.  I found a really nice hand thrown pottery bowl at an art market and included a box of Japanese rice crackers with it.

Homemade food gifts include cheese straws, spiced nuts, candy assortment (heavenly hash, divinity, pralines), and salt-free Creole spice mix in old canning jars with zinc lids.

Well, I've sent fresh bing cherries from California... but they were a good 55.00 with shipping which is a bit ridiculous.

Other than that BBQ obviously ( I own a mail order barbecue company, Pig of the Month), and frozen pizza from a famous place in Ohio, and cakes from Zingermans deli (really good - and really reasonable!)

I visited your web site, https://www.pigofthemonth.com/
Interesting concept! How long have you been in business?
Do you have a restaurant somewhere or are you strictly mail order?

5 year aged cheddar & crackers. Cheese from Wisconsin, especially good cheese, is hard to find elsewhere, or so I am told.

I've sent Wisconsin cheese assortment boxes and mixed cheese-and-sausage packs to friends and family all around the country. I've mainly gone through Wisconsin Cheese Mart for these gifts.

Another food gift I do frequently is Spanish groceries from La Tienda. I send a "care pack" of manzanilla olives, Serrano ham, Spanish cheeses, and other things to a friend of mine, and I send a couple of boxes of anchovy-stuffed Manzanilla olives to my partner every year.
