      Ernie's for a good breakfast.
And Flat Branch has one of my favorite desserts, the Stout Brownie.

My favorite 3 piece band in the world, The Bel Airs are based in Columbia. If you like roots music with tight two part harmony, check them out.

The University of Missouri makes and sells their own ice cream and is definitely worth checking out.  Booche's is a pool hall with good burgers and it has been reviewed in previous Roadfood books.

25 miles west of Columbia in Boonville is the Udder End Cafe inside the Farmer's Livestock Auction Barn that is only open on Tuesdays during livestock auctions. There you can get the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich in Missouri and maybe anywhere else. It was the Missouri Pork Association's first best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich winner in 2008.

Highcard...did Broadway Diner used to be called Fran's Diner back in the 1980s?  If so I had many meals of biscuits and gravy there.

Yup, McGuire...it was Frans...many a late night spent there having biscuits and gravy for $1.25.

My son is at Mizzou now, so I get there on occassion.

BTW, they actually moved the entire "building" across Providence Road and renamed it the Broadway diner.  Walgreens took their old lot.  Took me awhile to figure it all out, but when I saw the "building", I knew it was the old Frans.

Fran's was awesome...especially when I could afford a large B&G with a side of hash browns.

I can't remember the names but my wife and I usually stop in Columbia for a tenderloin and a concrete on our way to Kansas City.

I'm a Mizzou alum, lived there after graduating for 12 years, now one of my daughters just graduated....get back there several times a year...

                              some suggestions:
Booches for burgers and chili; an institution, been there over 100 years, I think.

Ernies for breakfast, as well as Broadway Diner
                              http://www.discoverthedistrict.com/members/ernies.html
There's also a good breakfast spot at Broadway and 6th, I just can't remember the name right now....

Shakespeare's is a must for pizza, their best pie, IMO, is the thicksliced pepperoni, and red onion.  Good combination.  http://www.shakespeares.com/index.cfm

Another pizza option, and a real friendly place is, G & D Pizza at Stadium and Broadway.  Good gyros there, too, as well as reasonable steak.  Been run by the same Greek family for years.

Flat Branch is a good brew pub.

Harpos probably the best college bar in town.

For a little nicer dining, Bleu on South 8th Street has been good for us; have had a few family celebrations there.

Kaldi's has good coffee, if you are into that coffeehouse thing.

And for toasted sub sandwiches that put any chain to shame, try the Sub Shop.

The veggie, sausage and kraut with swiss cheese, Rueben, and the pizza sub were always favorites of mine.
                              now I'm hungry.
