Smokin' Joe down for the ten count Sat, 11/5/11 10:36 PM (permalink)
Former heavyweight champ Smokin' Joe Frazier has terminal liver cancer and is now in a hospice.
He was a great champ and had probably the wickedest left hook I've ever seen.
He was always moving while in the ring and usually outweighed but he  never backed down.
I hope that his last days are painfree.

On TV today, they showed Mohammed Ali & his wife in the owners box at the AZ Cardinals- Rams game. I'm surprised he's still with us. The St. Joseph's Hospital in PHX has a Parkinson's Center named after him. I believe he donated a considerable sum to them. He & Joe had some classic fights for sure.

I did not know about this.  Thanks for posting.  I wonder if boxing will ever again be as good as it was in the 20th century?

Sorry to hear this. I was in the Phillipines (not at the fight) but my ship was there for The Thrilla in Manila. That fight was at like 9 in the morning! Hang tough Joe.

I did not know about this.  Thanks for posting.  I wonder if boxing will ever again be as good as it was in the 20th century?

I've been to a lot of "big" athletic events, but there was - and never will again be - anything so electric as boxing matches for the undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World.

The last such fight I attended was Spinks v. Tyson in AC.  Tyson was more than "ready to rumble" that night; he put Spinks down for the first time with a body shot that sounded like a shotgun going off!  That seat cost ten bucks for every second of action but was the best value for any ticket I ever bought before or since.

As a young college professor I wasn't financially able to attend any of the Ali-Frazier trilogy but I listened to them on the radio.  In many ways listening to a fight on the radio was even better than seeing it on T.V. or even "closed circuit", especially with Don Dunphy painting the stage for the theatre of the mind.

I never thought the day would come when I wouldn't know who the Heavyweight Champion is.  Yet here we are.  And that really sucks.

Thanks to Don King and his merry band of crooks and co-conspirators we'll never see (or hear, or feel) anything like that again.  Every time I see that grinning, fat felon waving and wearing American flags on O'Reilly I feel like throwing a shoe at the 60".

That ^&(%^*$ killed the Golden Goose, sliced it open, and stole the last egg.
