The combined company will have about 690 stores and 63,000 workers in eight states in the southern U.S.  The companies said Monday that no store closings are expected and the name Winn-Dixie will remain because of its strong brand recognition.

In the StPetersburg , FL area where we visit annually the Winn Dixie stores have been closing and those that remain are rather dingy uninviting places.

They've upgraded many of the local ones including the smaller, neighborhood ones around here. Nicer interior with emphasis on the deli, but same old crappy customer service. Since the bankruptcy, food prices are actually higher with most of what we buy actually cheaper at the Publix nearby without the hassel and forever checkout times at one or two open registers out of 12. It's just not worth bothering to shop there unless they have something that you can't get at Publix. Maybe Bi-Lo will change that experience.

All Winn-Dixies closed here a couple of years ago. That leaves us with only Kroger and Walmart as chain groceries. We do have a Sam's and a very good locally owned grocery, so I guess we aren't one of those infamous food deserts.
