Butter Flavored Oil Fri, 12/23/11 12:01 AM (permalink)
When did butter flavored oil cease to be a retail oil product? I thought that I'd pick some up and noticed that both local chains no longer carry it in the oil section. Wesson and others used to sell along side their other oils in quart bottles. I have to admit it's probably been decades since I remember buying any for my grandmother, but I never noticed it no longer in the stores shelves. As a specialty oil, Orville Redenbacker sells it with the pop corn, and crisco has the butter flavored baking sticks and shortening. I still see it at the institutional supply in gallon bottles and 17.5# containers, so it's still around, just seems to have fallen out of favor with retail consumers at some point.

I don't get why you'd want it, to be honest. If what you're talking about is that "butter" for popcorn like at the movies, it's not something I would ever voluntarily put in my mouth again. I just melt butter.

It's probably off the shelves because people stopped buying it. That stuff was NASTY!!!

I was given a recipe for a minced garlic dip I wanted to proof and didn't want to buy a gallon. Stuff wasn't bad as I remember it, although I'm sure the butter flavored pan sprays pretty much replaced the same use of it.

Walmart in NJ has buttery flavored oil in the popcorn section.  It is popular with backpackers to flavor their meals when they have no refrigeration

If the recipe is for a dip, why not just melt some butter and use it?  Melted butter should be compatable with a dip.

I don't think I have ever seen butter flavored oil in the grocery stores in my area. In big bottles any way.     I know what you are talking about and years ago I did look for it to use at home.     ... I just buy cheap margarine (40 to 45% oil) and use it cooking along with corn oil or bacon fat.

Has to be an oil in this recipe b/c part of the recipe is infusing the oil. It's a recipe one of the local indie Pizza places uses for their rolls and I wanted try my hand on it the way it is and duplicate as closely as I can. Probably going to try the popcorn oil if I can't find anything at a local, gourmet indie market.

My stand by recipe that I've used for ages has been melted butter, garlic powder, dried celery flakes, salt, & msg.

How much of the oil do you need?       Make Ghee for what is needed.

Butterlicious is butter flavored soybean oil.   If the Ghee is too strong add a neutral tasting oil; corn, soy or canola.    ... just my thoughts.

ps:  butter extract mixed with light tasting oil   .... put it in a spray bottle and you have a homemade butter flavored 'pam'  ...

I prefer Margarine instead of butter. So, i can not say about butter. Since me using margarine for last few years and it is good substitute of butter in compare of any other baking product.

Chef John Folse, for whom I have great respect, routinely uses butter flavored oil in his recipes and on his TV show.
