Blackeyed peas for luck and cabbage for money in the coming year.
For lunch we had hopping John, slaw and cornbread, so we should be in good shap.
Anyone else preparing for the new year with special food?

I made a black eyed salsa with corn, jalapeno, cilantro, olive oil, onion, rice and some spices that Dr. Iwanago took with her to her work.  She took some nice corn chips and it was gone immediately.

I also cooked some black eyed peas with smoked pork butte, onions, jalapeno, chicken stock in the crock pot along with some Tennessee fried cornbread.

Happy New years and good luck to all.

I would rather have had the Jack Daniel's today - I was recuperating from raking leaves for 6 long agonizing hours yesterday - but the weather was great and it was good to be outside.

Today we did the traditional black eyed peas with smoked hog jowl - we don't actually eat the jowl - just use it for flavoring the peas.  Then we had slow fried potatoes, mixed greens and corn bread.

You would think that after all of that we wouldn't be hungry but tonight we split a grilled New York Strip and shrimp with a baked potato.

              Tomorrow is up for grabs.

The Bride had to work today so I'm doing my thing tomorrow, (Monday) with a Bone-in Pork Loin Roast, Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes.
Rebeltruce & I are from PA and pork & sauerkraut is a "PA Thing" for New Years.
Black Eyed Peas is more of a Southern Thang.

Yup...it's a PA thing.......this year I made my own Kraut. Started about ten weeks ago. Jarred it up about two weeks ago...it's been aging in the fridge since. Gave quite a bit away but saved two 1/2 gallon jars for myself. Used one Sunday for my Pork and Kraut....it was some of the best I've ever eaten.....

Tasted much better than it looks......

rebel-one of my favorite dishes, both past and present, is sauerkraut and pork. Your picture is mouthwatering!

The blackeye peas tradition was something I learned in the US Navy and understood it to be a southern tradition. It was unknown in my Hoosier family circle and my wife's Staten Island>Minnesota family circle. When we first moved to Minnesota in 1970 we could not find blackeye peas in any form in the mainstream grocery stores. This year it was available canned (ugh), frozen and packaged.

I am very pleased that our nothern friends are beginning to appreciate some traditional southern food.  Quite frankly, black eyed peas are sorta tasteless without some hog jawl and ever better still some smoked pork butte, onions, garlic, jalapeno and a few other spices.  Some Tennessee fried cornbread with some real cracklins and jalapeno makes it even better and if you are even more daring, add some onions and corn.

Have at it my roadfood northern friends or better still drop on down to east Tennessee for some more of our greasy traditional southern poor folks food

Hey! Us Yankee's appreciate all the great Southern Treats! I lived in Brentwood TN for 4 years and got indoctrinated into all the great foods, NASCAR & Southern Music! I cook a mean Buttermilk Biscuit and Sausage Gravy as well as Collards and all the other good Meat & 3 fixin's.
My Daughter loved TN so much, she moved back there after College almost 20 years ago and married an Orangeneck! I'm fightin' a loosing battle to keep my Grandkids out of UT Tee Shirts! She sounds like she was born there ya'll. She lives in Franklin, TN. My Bride says she's movin' back after I go to that big Opry in the sky!

That reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw the other day : "I wasn't born in the South, but I got here as soon as I could."
Sundancer and others, maybe we need to stop spreading the good word about the South. How many of "them" do we want down here? (joke!)
