America's Best Comfort Food??? Tue, 01/24/12 9:18 AM (permalink)

Saw this article on Comfort food at home and on the road. Thought I'd ask the foodaholics at Roadfood. What comfort food do you indulge in at home? Where do you go to eat a comforting meal out? What would be on your comfort food list? In our home, Sunday pasta is a tradition that I continue in our home...also a great meatloaf...and some of my mom's depression dishes from my childhood in the 50's....all serve as a relaxing stimulus. Your thoughts?

Gnocchi, beef stew, Italian lentil soup.  I don't go out for comfort food cuz it's too good at home.

A baked potato. Bake it and top it how ever you like. So many options yet it's always good and a cheap way to fill the void.

Roast beef with gravy and mashed potatoes (leftovers make great hot roast beef sandwiches), mac and cheese, chili, on occasion I'll get a corned beef "kit" and make ruebens.

This soup is wonderful on a cold winter's day.  I have made it twice this winter and going to make it again, soon.  You MUST serve it with good rye bread !

                              Grandma's Sauerkraut Soup

                              3 pounds country style spareibs
                              10 cups cold water
                              2 pounds sauerkraut
1 cup dried green split peas
                              1/2 pound thick sliced bacon
                              2 cups finely chopped onions
                              2 tablespoons flour

                              1. Trim excess fat off the ribs

                              2. Place ribs in kettle and add 8 cups of water and undrained sauerkraut.

                              3. Bring to boil and simmer for one hour.

                              4. Meanwhile , combine the split peas and the remaining 2 cups of water in sacepan and cook until the peas are tender. Then add the peas to the soup and conttinue cooking

                              5. Cut the bacon into 1/2 inch pieces and cook in frying pan, over moderate heat, until golden brown. Add the onions and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally' With slotted spoon , transfer the bacon and onions to the soup and and simmer the soup for at least two more hours. Itmay contine to simmer longer and if it gets too thick, add more water. Add black pepper to taste before serving.

(My granmother used to let it simmer all afternoon.)
